South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Hi boys

gah1950:
hello andrew,
h&s is begining to be a nuisance, after all the years i have been at my job we have recently had to take a touch screen test, and a classroom test of some 80 odd questions and a practical test which consisted of loading a vibrating roller,a 20 ton excavator and an a25 volvo dumptruck, three of the tiniest items of plant that we run,the man in charge of the testing told us that he was embarresed testing us as he probably could not load or unload the items of plant himself.what purpose the loading/unloading served i dont know as we transport plant in excess of 100tons surely that is the type of plant that drivers should display their skills on to gain these CPCS licences,i am told that most of the big concerns in future will prohibit drivers from loading/unloading unless you have this new category irrespective of how long you have been at it,h&s has turned into a bigger industry than the industry it now dictates to. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: .

graham I have just done a course on load and secure after nearly 40 years of truck lowloader work.I went with an open mind hoping to learn and keep myself upto date. also it counted towards my 35 hour. How disappointed I was. The instructor was a young lad out of the Army with next to no experience. He tried to tell us that if we were to load one of your small rollers that we must always park up hill incase when it got on the truck it might run away.He diden’t like it when I said that wouldn’t happen because you need a down hill to be able to get the dam things up the ramps in the first place. He also diden’t like it when I disagreed when he said it was expectable to secure a 450 Komatso with just 2 chains around the top rollers :imp:
There was 6 of us on the course and the most upsetting part was 4 of them were new to the plant game and he was teaching them bad practice. How do these men get there teaching ticket…
Sorry for the rant but another ÂŁ65 waisted, need a lie down now

Regards Keith.

hello kieth,
i know what you mean, the trade is now filling up with potchers and glory boys in every department,as you quite rightly pointed out to load a roller of any description uphill is asking for trouble as it increases the angle of the climb greatly, the tail wagging the dog comes to mind.
regards graham.

alot of people mention this firm to me.mal.davies ran a very smart fleet, mainly on the coal.

wernt they based near tower colliery by the cafe ?

Hi Curnock
Yes you’re right ,Maldwyn was based there before he packed it in but his original yard was in Hirwaun, opposite the junction for the old road to Brecon via Penderyn. Back in the 70’s he ran Albions,Atkis,ERF’s.Fodens and the smartest F88’s (these were replaced by DAF 2800’s as shown in the photo) in the valleys
regards Mark
