Side light missing from truck but no VOR?

I noticed a side light on a rigid missing (2 lights on one side, 3 on the other), upon closer inspection it was gone completely, like someone had ripped it off, only the cables left. I reported it when I came back and filled a VOR form - this was 2 weeks ago - apparently the higher ups inspected it and decided it was OK as it was given to me again in the exact same condition last week and had been in use all week as it never appeared on the VOR board.

Legal / not legal?

as far as i am aware, you only need one on each side of the vehicle, back and front…basically there to show others the width of a vehicle…anyway, you didnt say if it was back or front, but if both at the front are working, along with both headlights, indicators, no problem…if both at the rear are working along with fog lamps, indicators, then all good to go…it seems to me as if extra ones have been added, and one has been knocked off, stolen, borrowed…so long as its reported then let the firm worry about it. maybe a new one is on order. as an after thought, IF the manufacturer had them fitted as part of the vehicle, then i assume all should be working.

Do you mean marker lights ?

I mean one of the orange ones on the sides that sit along the length of the vehicle.

Not a VOR requirement…

ok, thanks. Now I can nick the remaining 5

Yes. When I scraped the bus on a railing and broke an orange side light :unamused:  the head of engineering said it was still roadworthy to go out in the morning.

i think you will find any light as an original fitting must work at all times,

There should be an orange side marker light every 3 metres that’s a legal requirement

Either way it wants repairing but no one’s gonna send you to prison for driving it in the mean time.

Fitting a new one is a cheap quick job so no reason not to repair it either.

Plus better it’s sorted while there’s only 1 out as next week it could be another [emoji6]

If you took that vehicle for an MOT, it would fail if the light which is almost always the reflector as well nowadays are more than 3 metres apart, so that would make it unroadworthy.

Yep I knew there was a distance but couldnt remember what. An old engineer manager once said that there is only so many as a failsafe - so if one blows it’s still legal as the next one is still less than 3m.

It wouldn’t pass an MOT but they would let you drive away from a roadside pull with a defect like that,

if it had been in for a six weekly and not been sorted that would be the point at which I would point blank refuse to take it out.

My company’s fitter would have replaced them ,
As it would be he’s rear the boss would chew if a pg9 was issued by DVSA

Not in my experience, they would issue a defect notice with a certain amount of days to repair.

Dave…

We have been told as long as 50% or more of the side markers per side are working it is not illegal.

Someone may be confused with how many diodes in the lamp must be working.

Here’s a thought, change the bulb yourself, if it’s a led sealed unit, report it, and carry on, go back and get workshop to change it, or do it yourself.
