Corus steel truck taken at the shropshire truck show
Some pictures taken in Shrewsbury today. There is a fair in the quarry. ERF’s and Foden are very popular.
More from the shropshire show 2006/7
Come on Shropshire is there and no drivers, owners that live here??There must be some ex Swains , D&N morgan , Cadwallader etc drivers out there that have computers and want too tell some tales , stories pictures etc.Tony
Hi Tony,
Seems a bit of a job to get a lot of ex and current drivers on here. A lot look in but don’t register, which is a shame. Our region Mid Wales Shropshire and Herefordshire is a bit short of story tellers.
Cheers Dave.
Hi Dave I know there seems too be loads of other drivers owners etc on other forums but Shropshire seems too be lacking people too send pictures , stories etc.Oh well there loss.Keep up the good work its really interesting the sites you set up especially the border tippers , the Hereford and the South Wales one .Tony
Hi Tony,
The Hereford thread was started by Graham Schroeder, and although I started the South Wales one, it’s Andrew aka pete359 who has made that thread into what it is.The one I put stuff on most days is thhe Welsh Border etc, only trouble is that I don’t have many old pics, most of mine are new, which is a bit out of keeping with this forum.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave i didn’t know the Hereford thread was started by Graham Schroeder so thanks for telling me that. Its nice too see that it is still going and its great too see all the input from our neighbours (seeing I am from Shropshire !!). Yes Andrew has done him self justice for all the good pictures and stories and facts that he comes out with .You do a great job of putting great pictures on here don’t knock your self. How do you take the pictures are you a passenger taking pictures or do you have the camera fixed in your vehicle? About the older pictures I wished I had a camera when I was younger because now I realise how much I missed. Even though I am 46 I used too go with my dad a lot when I was not at school. Atthe time I thought ERF’s, Atkis, AEC ,Guys and other british lorries were too be blunt crap. But now I understand what Gardners and ■■■■■■ engines were part of our history ( I know ■■■■■■■ were American but some were made in the uk) When I got too go in a Volvo F88 for the first time it was soo much comfortable a heater a sleeper cab etc. It was heaven but in a way Volvo, Scania , Mercedes benz etc was the down fall of the british lorries. Its been the same with the cars and the bikes. We stayed still and tried too rest on our laurels. Bloody hell my fingers are sore lol. Once again thanks too all the people that right in with stories and pictures they bring back good times for not just me but any one that likes lorries be it drivers hauliers or any one that like trucks.Tony
Hi Tony,
My good lady takes the pictures, she does a better job than me,also she won’t drive my vans, drives her car but no to anything else.Like yourself I rode shotgun as a kid with my dad, also with one of Roberts of Knighton’s drivers. Always liked to see the different makes.I’m 16 years older than you,so the Swedish moters hadn’t arrived when I was a kid. The Atkinsons and Leylands plus Foden ERF were the long distance lorries along with AEC and several more. Didn’t take pics myself years ago, neither did my dad. Still got a few older ex drivers with pics to chase up. Was chatting to one saturday night, who has got quite a few that I can lend to scan onto the PC. One foreign lorry which I remember seeing as a kid,was an American six wheeler flatbed International which Gammond’s of Hereford ran,the boss drove it himself.
Do remember Swains D & N Morgan,Lloyds,Cadwalladers with what were in their day were biggish fleets.
I think the biggest fleet on the Welsh Borders these days is Mervyn Thomas who runs over 50 lorries and over a 100 trailers, could possibly be more. Will think of some more from way back when my memory kicks in.
Cheers Dave.
I drove for Cadwalladers on the continental side between 1981- 85. At that time they had about 120 artics.
They had some good work and there were some good lads on the firm. Shame about the Guv’nors but perhaps the least said about that, the better I understand one of the brothers has recently died. Which one would that be, Russell or Gordon?
pretty sure it was gordon

Hi Tony,
Perhaps Joint finished because of a lot of steel works closing in South Wales back a few years ago.I remember seeing there wagons around. I drove tippers mostly, finished a long time ago after a bad RTA,still get all ove the place driving my vans, also do a bit as cpc holder for one or two.
Cheers Dave.
Hi Dave you might be right about Joints packing up . I had too pack up my HGV on medical terms. Pete 359 has the story but I don’t want too tell every one on here about it. My dad was there till they packed up. He died 10 years a go of lung and throat cancer he was a good man and a good driver. He didn’t even take his HGV because he got it on grandfathers rights. He first drove an old Scania 110 for Cadwalladers of Roddington (the green ones). Then there was a miss match Vicors on a tipper , Nick Curton on either an old Atki or Seddon Atki from Church Stretton ,Bradley on a Bedford TM with a ■■■■■■■ E 290 that used too the partner of Nick Churton,Koopmans of Alberbery driving ERF A series with a 240 Gardner engine and 2 F88’s with a 240 engine one with a 16 speed box the other a 8 speed one.Cooksons from Condover near Shrewsbury drivin an old Volvo F86 artic Joint Motorways for over 12 years driving Mercs scania’s Daf’s etc and finally Owens They might be not in order because my dad liked too change !! we will say nor more lol. My dad also did timber work cutting down trees etc I know thats not really what the thread is about but I wanted too put it on here. Well enough of me you have done well. I wanted my own lorry but seeing as it is now I don’t think I would want too. Tell your wife she takes some good pictures!! Talk too you soon . Tony
Hi Tony,
Sounds as if you are in the same boat as me,drove lorries then was forced to give up. Your dad sounds the typical lorry driver, most chop and change, either for a bit more money or a disagreement. I drove for four different outfits in as many years, left the first for more money, then the second because the boss failed to get another licence for the vehicle which I drove on a temporary licence for a lime and slag merchant. Then I drove for Brisbanes of Knighton, the money was crap, couldn,t get enough of hours to make up on overtime,so when I was offered a job with C M Philpotts at Kington for a lot more money plus 60 hours a week I was gone. Then I had a bad smash after driving for them about a year after going there, which put me right out of a cab for good. My dad drove for the same firm all his working life, apart from 6 years service in the army in the second world war. He used to say he was going to leave and was offered several jobs, but he stayed. He never had to take a HGV test, was exempt ans so was I,as we both qualified under grandfather rights. My dad did go and take a course for a class one,so that he could show all the new drivers the ropes and teach them, saving the firm from sending them training, the crafty buggers saving them money .
I passed both my cpc examsdid home study, then went to Hereford for the exams. Did the national in 1979,the international in 1989. Anyway thats enough of my history,I will bore you.
Cheers Dave.
No that doesn’t bore me at all. Its nice too here from some one in the same position. Its hard not too be lorry driving now, all I wanted too be from when I left school was too be a lorry driver. Every holiday and some times not school holiday ! I went with my dad I loved it.When I took my HGV and passed on the second time it was a dream come true. I knew I was never going too have a colourfull past like my dad but I passed it. I drove a 7.5 tonnes riged at first taking portacabins ,hedge cutters for Mc Conall etc . Then I did some farm deliverys with a 7.5 tonne Merc 814 then going on to a 16 tonnes 1617 Merc.I then did some agency work for Laura Ashley with an artic and the creamery at minsterly. I eventually ended up driving for Joints till I lost my licence. Its hard now not driving but thats out of my hands. So I do know where you are coming from.I’ve bored you know . lol Keep sending the pictures they are great. I don’t have many pictures of the lorries I have drove but I will find some and put them on this forum. Take care . Tony
Hi Dave the Merc with the light on the top was the first lorry I drove at Joints.
The Leyland Daf was the one I used at the scap yard it was crap !!
The last lorry I drove was a 85 Daf that was a lovely motor just right for the job . But thats where it ended.
Tony
This was the first lorry I drove on the road. And thats my dad RIP Roger Gardiner in front of it.
