Stated with the expert knowledge of a car driver who knows nothing about trucks. I’m sure the UK is not a third world country that allows unbraked axles to be added to heavy vehicles, to increase carrying capacity.
16 days, that’s not bad. How long did all the people who were going to give up fags last?
I agree with the first sentence but not so much with the second. The purpose of having a temporary overide is in order to allow lighter lorries to overtake fully laden ones, not to allow similarly affected vehicles to race each other. That is simply bad driving and nothing to do with limiters, and would happen at whatever the limit was set or even there there weren’t any.
But NZ is known for its challenging single carriageway roads through equally challenging terrain. It only takes one other vehicle, or even no other vehicle, to create a collision.
You think that a 3 axle tractor unit with a micky mouse mid lift and brakes will out brake a 4 axle rigid and drawbar trailer without jack nifing.Shows who’s the truck driver here.
I’m willing to bet that a 9 axle 60 tonner drawbar outfit can stop quicker from 60 mph than a 6 axle 44 tonner from 56 mph.
You have how much experience in this millennium.?
How many 9 axle 60 tonner drawbar outfits have you driven?
I think the A15 and other roads should be 40mph or make the driving exam 2 hours longer to test concentration!
I could imagine if you had a limited use per day of a 'boost button", say 10min, it might encourage it to be used only as intended.
When there are drivers trying to get around the basic hours rules, I really can’t see them politely using the boost button in the way suggested
Correction 5 axle.
We don’t have such beasts here. But NZ obviously thinks that they can stop well over 44t from 90 kmh in that configuration.
I drove 6 axle drawbar outfits and knew at least that they will stop quicker than a 4 axle artic without the risk of jacknifing.
I’m sure they can, just as I can stop a 21axle configuration. I can also stop two and four axle configurations.
Congratulations, do you want a medal, or will a safe driving award suffice?
Obviously you need further training. In ten million kilometres I’ve never jack knived any combination, nor failed to stop.
If you are representative of the average UK driver, no wonder consignors prefer rail.
That’s a good topic, how many drivers would admit to jacknifing a trailer,
The closest I’ve come was at less than walking pace whilst spinning around in an ice covered yard with a slight downhill camber. I had visions of it folding in half but The Gods must have been smiling down on me that day.
I was going through a village with the road going to the left half way through, not a severe turn but you wouldn’t be going fast
The road was wet no ice or snow and i just touched the brakes lightly, well when i looked in the mirror i could see the trailer coming out and immediately took my foot off the break and i think i did something with the steering and got it back on track
It’s a frightening few seconds to experience my heart was in my mouth and it took a long time to put it behind me
I think it might work if there’s a cooldown on it - you can temporarily disable the limiter (or increase the max speed to 60 rather) for whtever 30-60 seconds at a time but only once every 10 or 30 minutes. It should also be a PITA to activate the override to discourage abuse like you would have to bend forward and activate a specific lever then press another button to confirm then a 3rd one to confirm your liability yada yada then have to endure a 1 minute warning beep. Thus you would only use it when you really need it
there is of course a simple solution to all this… if you drive at 52 - 53 if you catch someone up going slower you have 3 or 4 mph in reserve to get past easily, safely and in a reasonable amount of time. If someone wants to go faster than you again they can get past the same way. no changes no magic button no nothing.
I recall many years ago when I used to drive a Renault(not the Magnum)for a Belgian company their drivers were quick to point out that if you wanted to by pass the speed limiter temporarily you needed to turn the ignition key off and on very quickly. The truck would then travel as fast as the engine could manage for a period of time.Personally i have never been that desperate but the drivers seemed happy with it.
Not quite as useful as my first limiter. On a brand new Daf at Econofreight they did not tell me thay had fitted one. In those pre limiter days I found that it was powered through an ordinary fuse. Guess what I did, but made sure to remember each time it went in for service.
