DEANB:
Some random pics of EC transport and a Spanish haulier, who I cant remember the name of ■■?

Thanks ever so much DEANB for all the pics you have put on the thread I really appreciate it. Memories are sure to be jogged with them.regards Geoff

Yes , you are right Dennis ,Bernie retired 2 years ago ,he used to run ERF dustcarts in Cherbourg

Edit to add : Buzzer I might be able to get a number for him from Steve Tremaine who was a friend of his when Steve was working for GBE Cherbourg ,he now lived near Dinan but might still be in touch.

The company (Spanish you could not think of ) , Doman ,Irun

That’s the one Nigel, they seem to have disappeared along with Jose Carillo who used to
have loads of mercs pulling fridges and Ollouigie ■■ not sure about spelling but another big
Spanish haulier who were always through Poole.

talking of cherbourg any of u guys have the pleasure of meeting pinnochio

I heard a lot about Pinocio the bike Gendarme, he would watch with binoculars for Irish and English trucks coming in to Cherbourg and "find a fine, you must pay ".
Or coffee money.
The rumour was , he had a grudge, due a truck driver slaming on the brakes.
He went up the back end of the trailer, and broke some bones.
I used the Love boat Seakink Southampton to Cherbourg.
The good looking freight check in girls in Cherbourg.
One was called Anne Marie or Marie Noel, brunette with stunning big blue eyes, her partner was a drip apparently.
She runs her own baby clothing shop in town.
The two good old boys ,who met and married local ladies after the war, the two freight marshalls were Canadian.
Another myth, was the Gendarme on a bike, who patrolled the Paris Periphique.
He had a long ginger beard and was Scotish.

Very under estimated he spoke better English than most gave him credit for, hence gobbing on the CB caught many a driver out as it is rumoured he had a CB also and listen into tale of “been on the wire from Bordeaux” how no one ran him over is a miracle, Buzzer.

I think Doman and Geposa were swallowed up by Dentressangle, and Olloqui ( I cant spell it either ) was swollowed up By San Jose and Lopez when the new combined company SJL was formed

hi buzzer ye there was also a rumour about the irish guy who gave him a few digs in the port and got arrested since 1984 when i started shipped in and out cherbourg alot but stopped by him in port only twice and both times was ok just spoke to him politely and no probs . funny enough when iwas working 4 you guys never got stopped

Why a myth Toby , 2 drivers from Murphy International got charged with it.

We never had a problem on GBE with him , but he always was in the Cherbourg office and was friendly with the office.

kerbut ye same here i was on gbe outta barton then fradley for a while no probs

The McGendarme on the Periferique was no rumour. I got nicked by him on his BMW one night doing a flyer when I was on Grangewood.
He hated us - I don’t know why.
David

DEANB:
The rest of the brochure.

DeanB I remember the mantainance crew very well especially the man 2nd from the left also the last man.The days when we had to reverse up on to the top deck after you had a drink or three trying to follow their instructions in reverse, needless to say it took a while and all they would do was twist their nose then shake your hand.Happy Days

Cliff luxton:
The truck on the right of Phills E.R.F. is a Fransen daf might have been driven by Peter Dyke.

Cliff I used to know a Fransen driver years ago his name was Brian and I seem to remember he won a bravery award somewhere abroad. apparently he had a hazardous cargo and something went wrong and to save lives he drove into a field, hence he was awarded the gong. I have a faded photo somewhere when he and I stopped between Valladollid and Burgos before the autovia was even thought about.ie 1978 or 1979 cheers mdear

Cliff luxton:
That looks like Ketty in Phils E.R.F in the second photo behind the Volvo. R&G trailer I reckon.

Definately R&G Trailer, RGM-004

Cheers Richard Geary, ( the G of R&G )

Richard I towed that trailer many times when I subbed for Phill Horridge probably loaded eastliegh then tipped Santo Tirso with the big crates of latex? Then would probably loaded Porto with Towels to Bedford, being cleared customs with Augusto the agent in Oporto.HappyDays regards Geoff

The amount of time wasted to clear Customs at TERTIR Porto, was phenomenal.
You could fly back to the UK and back, and still not cleared.
The smell from the saw mill would waft across in the wind.
A German driver was having an affair with a married Portuguese woman.
The jealous husband spotted his truck, on the entrance to the TIR park, he cut the throat of the driver, but it was the wrong guy.
The normal driver was on Holiday.
Alvera Lisbon TIR, what a dump that was.
The stink from the river, the water was black, rats and mosquitoes the size of sugar lumps.
The smell would make you ill, nausea and a headache.
Both TIR parks had cafes that did Bifanas, a bread roll with hot and spicy beef.
A tango is a beer with a red fruit syrup.
For years, there was a Spanish tractor unit, in the Customs compound in Poole docks.

Thank God for the last 2 words in that post Toby ,it makes it have something to do with Poole.
