Leyland Gas Turbine tractor unit with a fuel oil tank trailer. I am sure I was told it operated out of Stanlow , Cheshire.

Hi there Paul, yes, I think your right… can remember it being featured in the Shell-Mex and BP news magazine… one of the drivers was saying as he drove through Chester everyone was looking up into the sky thinking there was a jet plane coming into land… It was an experimental Leyland and don’t think they got any more… Did you see my reply to the Scammell Trunker and trailer?..cheers…Bryan

Yes thank you for your reply , yes I am sure you were correct the Scammell Trunker with the Thompson tank trailer did have 7 pots. The Gas turbine engine Leyland was not successful because they couldn`t keep the temperature of the turbine down , it got to hot , plus the lack of money to keep the project going , if you are ever in the Leyland area in Lancashire and have a bit if time to yourself go the Leyland lorrie Museum they have the Gas turbine engine on a stand and is has sections cut out , you can see the workings of the gas turbine, Esso and Castrol they had the same vehicle on trial. Did you keep any of the news magazines , I would be very interested in having a look at them if you have any ?.

Hi there Paul,I can remember both Castrol and Esso being mentioned at the time trialing the Leyland with the gas turbine…sadly the only one of the magazines I did keep was the one with a feature of Dunball terminal…could kick my self now for not keeping them…The Leylord Lorry Museum sounds like an ideal place to visit… cheers…Bryan

Hi “Tankerjack” ,
I dont know a lot about fuel tankers ,..........but I do know that the Leyland photographed here is a Freighter. The Constructor` were 3 and 4 axle rigids .

Sorry about that , “Tankerjack”.

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

I don`t know why I put that down because when I put it in my files as a Leyland Freighter , thanks for putting me right Cattle wagon man.

re the Scammell and spirit trailers,we called them6.3s and all ours were 7 potters, the Leyland Buffalo with the single axle trailers,we got 2 and they lasted weeks only, they were taken off the road, deemed to be unstable as,when loaded they would lift the inside wheel on the trailer at not much more than 10mph,the thing was, from the driving seat it never felt unstable.

Which depot did you work from and how long did you work as a driver joeshell ?

Hi mate, started at Teesport before brand separation, then owing to a"disagreement"with Middlesbrough Council over rates, they closed Teesport and i moved to Jarrow Terminal till i took the money and ran, after 25 years!!

ERF Recovery vehicle at Fulham depot.

Hi Paul

Showed my dad this forum and photos - he drove a good few of the tankers shown. He also remembered the ERF recovery vehicle from Fulham. Apparently the guy who drove it was a bit of a character. He went out once to pull one of dad’s mates from The Haven out of snow.
