Cheers Dave.

This is a York Tr, as you can see, no problems with it, we even stuck another axle on, 26 Tonne pay load on our Road Train.

The convertion we did.

Think they also had a depot in Cannock, I seem to remember taking tractor units there to get 5th wheels fitted.

Aah Yes - The York Big D that everything had before we went foreign & adopted Jost

York Trailers was origionally started by Fred Davies who IIRC came from Canada( which is the reason York used the Maple leaf as their symbol).Their main plant in the UK was in Corby and it wasn’t until many years later they were “persuaded” by Goverment grants and subsidies to open a plant in Northhallerton in the early 70’s which coincided with the launch of their new LD (Low Deck) solid chassis, the SL (castellated chassis) continued to be built in Corby but sadly it was eventually discontinued and I believe all production ceased as Northhallerton became the centre of the York operations.Davies Magnet 5th wheels were,I believe, also connected to Fred Davies but the DM 5th wheel wasn’t a patch on the York Big D which became the top selling 5th wheel for many years. All the tractors I got new at Bewick Transport I speccd with York Big D and it was only in later years that we started using Jost couplings.York trailers were always my favourite in the early years as I favoured the SL castellated frame and also the York running gear and brakes were somehow smoother, however I went off the LD chassis big time and moved over to Crane Fruehauf which were a far better chassis than the York LD IMO.I’d stopped dealing with York years previously to their closure plus I didn’t reckon Jim Davies the old mans son.Cheers Bewick.

Interesting and unusual Merc307 in the background with, what looks like,an A-frame drawbar.

That 307 belongs to heath haulage of stoke on trent in the late 80"s early 90"s with possibley me behind the wheel ,we had four of them trailers and they were a pain to reverse unless you were empty then you would unhook them and push it around, the load in the pic were air conditioning stuff from a firm in stoke called moducell and because the stuff was light you could get a few boxes on them .also we had to run a tacho when we had trailer on …

Thanks for the info/reply Yorkie.
Are ‘Heaths’ still going and if so,do they run anything similar to these nowadays?

Cheers Phil.

Hi Marc I don’t bother with a scanner I now use my Ifon (used to use digital camera) and photograph the pic/article then load onto my pc then to Tinypic and then edit/crop if needs be!!!

You can just see the yellow background on this pic of one of my Scania’s and ex Gregory 113 6X2, may not be quite as good as a scan but saves a lot of time and stops some people copying my pics!

And this pic of my old employee John Shaw who unfortunately died on Friday he worked in my yard for many years!

Regards Pat

What’s the prize Phil, for the best answer to the question ‘what’s the old lady saying to the driver of the Bath and Portland wagon’?

Is the Dodge car transporter on the A55 in N. Wales? I thought so at first but now I’m not so sure.
Perhaps won’t be asking about the prize for that one then. :unamused:

It looks like the tunnels at Penmaenmawr on the A55 but that begs the question how did he get under the 13ft 9in railway bridge at Conwy the under harbour tunnel wasn’t built then ?

Hi lads,I think the Dodge is on the A4 between Avonmouth and Bristol, the tunnell is the one under the suspension bridge to protect the traffic.Dont forget Phil (numbum) is a Bristolian like me so many of his photos are from this area, the Jakeways and the R.F.Fords motors are seen in Avonmouth when everything had to go through the town.
Pat,thanks for the advice on the scanner thing,my extension lead was wonky so its all systems go now, really sorry to hear of Johns death mate,he sounded like a chap who could fix anything…you also missed the line up of Hills M.A.Ns I put up a few days ago though…youre slipping

Some pics later on,Cheers Bubbs,

Dont think its the 55,as the tunnels around that road at that time would have been rounded, not flat precast like the one in the picture.

One of the tunnels had a flat entrance nearer Llanfairfechan but also thought about the A4 under the clifton but thought the rock looked too ragged, ah well someone will be along with the answer.

Hi Mate

I would have thought you would have met John he was my yard man for years! Some said he was a miserable barst**d but he would help anyone if he could although he was very gruff at times!!!

I’m glad the scanner problem is fixed now

No I did spot the Hills pic I am saving it for when the Southampton thread is in danger of falling of the front page

Same as this one;

But it’s much easier to move your pics!

Regards and thanks Marc.

Pat

Hi Spardo,
From memory the only time a woman spoke to me through the window as in the photo was to ask me if I was lonely and would I like some company. In her case I dont think so.
Marcus is spot on with the photo of the transporter on the A4. Some of the people who jumped from the bridge used to splat on the road but now that canopy is there they would just bounce off it without affecting the traffic.

Phil.

Numbum:

Cheers Phil.

Hi Phil, does anybody remember a company called Tuckers from the West country (they might of been from Cornwall) who were running to Germany in the early seventies, I think they might of had a Scania 80.

Also, can’t you and Bubbs start a caption contest in Bulleys Bar as I am sure that old lady is saying “you will see a black dog sat on the corner, chuck a right there”.

Regards Steve.
