Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

Pebbles 74:

Saviem:
Hello all, can we please get rid of those Land Rovers, they are b… awfull vehicles, and if the truth is really known, due to stupid jingoistic hysteria the real reason that the marriage of Leyland and Bedford was blocked, resulting in the “gift” of Leyland to DAF, and the eventual end of lorry production in GB. Oh, and if some idiotic Land Rover enthusiast really wants to know what a “true on off road” 21st century 4x4 should be, try a Jeep!!! (and save yourself £8000), Lets get back to "proper "lorries, or shall I throw in the G Waggon, Esarco, et al. Cheerio for now,

Sir Anthony Bamford (JCB) wanted to buy Land-Rover in the eighties, but ‘she of the iron handbag’ (or at least one of her minions) put the blockers on it. I believe it was becuase LR was one of the few vaguely profitable bits of the wider Rover edifice & it was needed a ‘sweetener’ to any potential suiters for the whole - I think this was around the the time that Honda were on the scene.

However I whole heartedly agree lets not taint Marcus’s superb thread with any more of this Solihull tat.

Andrew

Oh Dear,

we are way off thread now eh!!

Help Bubbs, direct us back on course please !!

I have just posted this on the Peter Slater forum but I noticed your appeal for help in redirecting Bubb’s forum back onto its correct path so I hope this gets things moving in the right direction.

May I make a suggestion - why not start a Land Rover topic then everyone would be happy. As Bubbs knows I am a Land Rover owner and would add my to the new topic but not here, not on Scrapbook Memories.

Hello again,Well what a lot of postings since my last contribution…although Landys dont do anything for me  ,there again not all the stuff I put up is going to please everybody…ok heres todays selection,a couple of real grafters to start with. If we could get old Harry Gill up into the Atki and drag,we’d never get him out of it…ehh Harry

Cheers Bubbs,

Re Posting pictures
Regarding the difficulties amongst our “older generation” to be unable to post pictures --there must be loads out there waiting to be viewed ,i could never master the art -the instructions were not clear enough for me so i asked my friends on here to post for me (bubs) by simply e mailed them with attachments of my pics and got going --i felt a fraud i admit and was determined to do it for myself which i did making many mistakes on the way possibly to the annoyance to other subscribers but i got there in the end so keep on trying dont be too proud not to ask advice ! !

hiya,
Would take a bit of priseing possibly needing a crowbar to get me on board, but no way would you get met out
if I had to unload and assemble that lot, could be persuaded with a pallet load and curtainsides though, must
be getting soft in my old age eh’ happy days.
thanks harry long retired.

It never ceases to amaze me what people have “hiding” in cupboards and drawers…
Martintrux have long finished business, but the old yard is still there today and is owned by an ex-Martintrux employee.
Andrew Child went to visit him and hey presto, he came away with this awesome aerial shot of said yard. Reckon it was taken early 1980’s as there are a couple of MAN’s in the shot and they were A reg.
Love the atmosphre of the “busy” yard, with all the workers cars, the units and the trailers all just scattered around. The old fashioned diesel tank and ramp slap bang in the middle. I bet that was “CHAOS” trying to move around on a Saturday! And there’s a couple of “scappers” parked up by the fence (left of shot), one looks to have a door open, the other with cab permanently tilted. Even a Bedford TK parked up.
This is a truly quality photograph showing how a “proper” transport company used to be run! Many thanks to Andrew Child for allowing me to post this on Bubb’s thread for all to see and enjoy…

What a great pic Ash,look at the trailer full of white pallets waiting to be “dehired”…beer vouchers for everyone

Cheers Bubbs,

Hiya …love the martintrux yard photo, Ash where would that be ■■? i remember seeing the trux but never knew where they
had their yard…cheers John

This picture of Martintrux yard @ Chadwell St Mary brings back some good memories for me.My uncle Tony was a subbie on there when i passed my test over 30 years ago & thats where i pulled many a trailer from & to,UK & Europe.

Martintrux moved to that yard from Chadwell Heath, where i spent many a good times as a schoolboy, travelling all over Europe with Uncle Tony

Spot on retriever,

I too have nothing against Landy’s,
we use them for siting caravans - have a couple of Brutes with big winches & covered with hitches, signs & beacons
and I drive a Range Rover myself
But Bubbs Thread is not the place for these, Someone start a Landy thread & we’ll put them on there !!

Oh my ,what have I started. :unamused:
Just a little explanation - as the LzRs are not lorries in the strict sense, I wasn’t really sure where to mention them, but as it was a thread on older vehicles I figured it was at least half-sensible.
I do find the whiny posts, well, just whiny really, they just clutter up the thread and contribute sweet FA :unamused: . There are some truck brands I personally can’t stand but I am not going to waste everyones time going on about it. :smiling_imp:

How about this, someone start a Landrover thread which I will glady contribute to, and the mods get rid of the stupid whiny posts as well as merging the Landrover posts into the new thread? Sounds like a fair deal to me.

By 'ell, that picture stirs the memory. I got a brand new Atki. tipper just like that in 1962, (the one I took UP Sutton Bank, loaded). A very fine machine, 150 Gardner, 6 speed DB box. Fred Chappell, Batley was my company and Fred was the best gaffer I ever worked for.

That is just lovely! I once made a 1:24 scale model of a similar MAN (but a 4x2) always did like them.

Actually, you have not started anything. Why not create a Land Rover thread yourself, I am sure many people will contribute - including myself (I own a 110 Defender County - my third) - and I would like to hear of other people’s experiences of those running the type with the TD5 engine.

'Cos that would make me look like a saddo. No seriously, I just wanted to offer someone else the opportunity, as well as maybe try and make myself look a bit less like the forums resident landrover-humper.

Can I apologise to everybody for putting a land Rover on this thread but it was an innocent response to a question by bma.finland about UK vehicles in Finland. All I was saying was that the only UK vehicle I saw while there was a LR. (I did also see a couple of Routemasters but no way was I putting a bus on here).

There is no need to apologise. As for Routemasters I have beside me now by the monitor - its one of those superb large Sunstar models of a Routemaster. Route 207, which if anyone remembers back into the 1950s was previously the old 607 trolleybus route between Shepherds Bush and Uxbridge which turned around by the Odeon Cinema.
