Apologies Bewick for the late contribution to this thread but am quite a newbie to this forum. Re this topic (8 cyl) I am sure an old friend / neighbour and one time my mentor as an apprentice whilst at Ferrymasters back in the 80’s told me once about this vehicle (he being the late Joe Hurley - a real funny guy, great fitter and literally larger than life!) At the time (and it must have been when he was an apprentice circa late 60’s, early 70’s) he worked for the ministry of defence / goverment transport devision at RAF Burtonwood (I can’t think what the transport division was called back then - was it something like DSA?) Someone will know I’m sure, but by all accounts, they had many bespoke types, usually prototypes or stuff for export and some of the descriptions of the Guy just seem to ring true with some of the stories he used to grace us with. Maybe that’s where the elusive vehicle ended up! Hope this helps, Dave.

hiya,
Trev the Big J with even a Gardner 180 was as rare as chicken’s teeth, not a lot produced and never came across any operated by the BRS who incidentally ran more “Js” than anybody else.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Harry,
We had 16 of them at Wolves with that horrible 6 speed and had air assisted steering, they had been stood for years and didn’t get reg.no’s till 79 on a “T”. Mine was an “R” reg and had proper power steering with a 9 speed fuller but everybody hated driving them with the 180 motor, top speed was a miserly 58mph   How times change !!!

That one was registered in Newcastle on Tyne

There used to be a John Forman Scammell parked in T.E.P.S yard in Hull for many years, I don’t know if it ever got restored or scrapped.

Hello again, todays selection is slightly different…I’ve been to Shirleys Transport on a few occasions and always recieved a warm welcome, here are a few pics from the company…they certainly get their moneys worth from a wagon…before and after.

An F10 on the M4 to finish with…just to add to this, none of the pics are recent ones, probably a lot of the stuff in the graveyard have gone :frowning:

Cheers Bubbs,

Does anybody happen to know if Shirleys have still got the ERF LV 6 wheeler in the back of their yard?. Did it survive the recent clear out?. LTU922C was its number I think.

All the vehicles pictured above were still in the yard today.
Although the 8 wheeler Volvo is very rough now - the doors have fallen off

There were several ERF LVs but they all looked to be 4 wheelers (I think- I will check the pics.)

Bubbleman - when were your pics taken?

And did you get a shot of the Albion LAD cabbed tanker - it is parked next to the 8 wheeler Volvo

Would love to see those

A couple of oldies seen in Bristol.

The main A4 Bath road in Bristol. The turning on the right is where this chassis would have left the works when new.

Not long after the war. MWT on the bonnet must be some sort of wartime number.

Cheers Phil.

Hello again, great pics again Phil  ,Fryske…I’ve been to Shirleys about 4 or 5 times,1988 was probably the first time,

Heres LTU922C working, parked at ■■■■■■■■■■ Basin,Bristol…the driver having gone for a pot of tea

Then on my first visit,LTU was resting in the graveyard looking sad :frowning:

When I last went in she had deteriorated more and looking pretty bad

The only Albion I managed to get.

The ERF on the right may be the one you saw on your visit

Ok,I had a request for some McKelvies motors, heres a few.

Cheers Bubbs,
