Todays stuff,a Bowker to start with…we dont want Harry to fall asleep getting bored

Cheers Bubbs,

hiya,
Wonder what the story is here, 240 is sure to know the area looks like Bowker “land” adjacent to the office and workshops and yes the Atki is one i’ve driven on occasion and most likely the one behind it too,you know just nip and get that trailer from or just park that one up before you go home, the mystery for me is if it is “the land” why are the “foreigner’s” parked up with the Bowker motor’s only enough room for their own stuff normally.
thanks harry long retired.

You’re absolutely right Harry - the photo was taken on “the land” as it was always called - do you know what it used to be, by the way? The Hamilton Arms is in the background.

I’m struggling to make it out on the copy of that photo I already have, but I think that the TK is signwritten to “Edgar Pickering, Whitebirk Estate, Blackburn” - I’m sure you’ll remember them, Harry! I’ve really no idea why it might be in the yard, though.

And you thought the yard was congested in those days? What about the late 80s, when we were putting 18m drawbars in there??

In the same spot, around 1988:

On the opposite side of “the land”, c.1983

See the little ‘bubble’ at the back, specially for Marc??

And another in the same spot, though probably around 1987

The view from the road:

Meanwhile, on the other side of the road - how many other hauliers had a yard with a main road runnung through the middle? - things were once like this:

But ended up with motors like this:

Hello again,to reply to Pat,Jims doing a great job on the model of LJA…I reckon when its finished it should spend 11 months in your office and 1 month on Jims sideboard!!
NZ Jamie is right about the European ERF being a bit rare over here,of course the rust problem saw most of them off thats why the ones down under faired better because of the nicer climate…thanks for popping the pics on mate.

hiya,
Yes i do know Chris the “the land” was formerly a bowling green but don’t know if it belonged to the Hamilton or if it was municipal, just Googled it not much in there now unlike the old days eh.
thanks harry long retired.

I think we put the yard to better use than bowling, eh?

hiya,
We did Chris, but we better keep quiet about it, because if Norman Ingram the kingpin of the “Nottingham thingy” looks in we might just get our ears boxed, he’s a rufty tufty bowling fanatic.
thanks harry long retired.

One of three petrol tankers that went over on the same roundabout in Avonmouth. Entering the roundabout was like driving into a saucer and the camber was changed after this one.

Cheers Phil

I was interested when I saw an Atkinson Raider at Llandudno 2011 as it was a name that i was not familiar with…

The write-up in the vehicle …

"In 1969 BWA 612G was a tractor unit. In 1978 there was a shortage of four wheeler flat bed lorries. Hauliers were having tractor units stretched to make four wheelers.

Atkinson supplied twenty five complete chassis and transferred the cab and running gear of BWA 612G to one of the chassis and re-registered it as DCK440S. The lorry has now been re-registered back to its original year of registration 1969 BWA 612G"

References to late 1960s rigids give

Defender - eight wheelers
Searcher - six wheelers
Raider - four wheelers (name unofficial)

I do wonder what the 25 chassis supplied were classified as by Atkinson. They would seem to fit in the proposed “Raider” category. As regards this particular vehicle presumably it was a Silver Knight, but in its present state the chassis cannot be seen as a Silver Knight. Perhaps it should be registered DCK 440S ?

Hello again,Nice to see the “then and now(ish)” Bowker pics from Chris…you cant buy stuff like this at Tesco’s   .Another load of classic pics from Phil, always good quality…Avonmouth has some “exciting” bends, the slip road off the M5 was a good 'un before the M49 was put in,I stopped when a S80 Foden of Geest bananas went over and got the driver out the cab, luckily he was shook up and a few small cuts…my recollections were seeing him frantically writing out his log book with blood running down his face sat on the hard shoulder with the Thermo King at extremely high revs, belching out black smoke cos it was on its side…Effff the fridge he said, this is more important! .
Welcome to T/net TGPhotos…I know someone on here who’ll sort your enquiry out

The double drive Big ‘J’, RWG 553H, must be the elusive straight 8/240 tractor unit we’ve all been looking for? set back pin, anonymous grill? Bewick, prove us wrong. P.S. as an apprentice d/f I worked on Big 'J’s with 240’s. Or did I? P.P.S, I love your pics Bubbs, especially the black and whites, you are the legend of this forum.

With the air intake on the n/s I would think that 6 legger unit has a ■■■■■■■ motor in it, Gardners and Rolls engines had the air intake on the o/s, with a Perkins V8 510 they had twin air stacks !

hiya,
Trev the Big J with even a Gardner 180 was as rare as chicken’s teeth, not a lot produced and never came across any operated by the BRS who incidentally ran more “Js” than anybody else.
thanks harry long retired.
