Cheers Bubbs,

Thats a nice pic of the John Phillips motor (another one sadly gone) They were a nice firm to work with from up yonder. They did quite a lot of trunking work for BOC / M&S ■■■■■■■■■■■ and their drivers always in smart denims and shirts (I think I found out why one day after opening the rear doors to load of one of their reefers. They had a contract IIRC with Falmers Jeans and the contents of that box looked strikingly similar to their uniform. Of course, this was purely an assumption…

That’s a great old picture Lawrence  , I remember seeing that interesting looking landmark whenever I went up the A1, isn’t it somewhere near Durham  . It was always one of those places when I said to myself that the next time I am up this way I shall try to have a closer look and book half an hour break. Of course like so many other places I never did get around to it so hopefully you or one of the other North East lads can tell me what it’s called and exactly where it is so that I can do a Google search and find something out about it.
You have got me thinking now  where abouts in The North East did I used to see that steam train made out of bricks  .

Regards Steve.

The landmark behind Curries Scammel is called Penshaw Monument, it’s about 3 mile from Sunderland on the Chester-Le-Street road. The brick train is at Darlington on the A66 by-pass.

Thanks Bri, I never realised that it was a folly, I always thought that it was something that the Romans had left behind  .

hiya,
The Penshaw Monument was open to the public some weeks ago IE’ you could go up the steps in one of the columns and take the view from the top, this is not normally possible, have never been to the top I don’t think the old legs would get me up there now, it is supposed to be a fantastic view for those who have done it.there used to be a transport cafe on the main road near the structure bit near home for me but decent scran and a decent cuppa.
thanks harry long retired

…well thats great news if thats the case. I’m sure they ran into bother late 90’s / early noughties but maybe they pulled thru. I think they had another big job with a beef producer up their way that closed down (and there was a few lads on that job - the place could have been on the old Moffat Edinburgh road)

I borrowed this one for another thread, it seems a waste not to share it on this great thread.

Early F86 for Christian Salvesen supplied by Ailsa Trucks
