I can remember as a very young lad our coal being delivered by this merchant and a wagon identical to this.Hiya… some really good photo’s come along this last week not as there was anything wrong with bubblemans photos it just as
bubbs was’nt getting the commercial motor in 1926 or we would have the pleasure of his stash…
studing this photo of the steamer by the coal truck i see a 1958 hillman minx and a lamberetta with the square front mudguard
which could date this photo as early as 1959… it must shock some people that steamers was still used up untill the 60’s when
the diesel engine had been sucssesful for 25 years +… it would seem easier to nip round with a littel petrol/diesel rather than
get stoked up every morning with the steamer…some drivers moan about the air pressure taking a long time to build up.
John
The little truck is what remains of a Shelvoke and Drewery ‘Freighter’ which were used as dustcarts, parcel vans etc.

Pete.
Pete ,I have been searching hi+lo for pictures of that thing! At last I can get off the net.
A bit of history with this photos. During the WW2, 1941 to be exact, Winston Churchill ordered that national treasures should be taken out of London and safely stored somewhere. The National Gallery collection of art was taken to Manod slate mine near Blaenau Ffestiniog. The GWR lorry and container were one of many that made the trip.
