Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

Hi Piston Broke, is Hanham near to Hanham Abbots? I used to deliver to a large house (a former Abbey) with it’s own private plant nursery. I used to go past Wick quarry, then under the Avon Valley Railway and around some bad bends past a building with a strange statue on the roof. I’m trying to imagine where the lorry yard would’ve been.

Piston broke:
Some time ago, I was lucky enough to gain access to Smiths of Hanham’s yard. Long gone now and, as is the way now, the yard is built on :unamused:

Not very good pics taken with a not very good camera by a not very good photographer, so apologies in advance…

Some of the regs were familiar - DYA 910T I’m guessing is ex Wincanton. I think 'TT and 'FJ are both devonish - does anyone know the original owners?

Might have been Frank Tucker’s or maybe Parsons Transport from Alesybeare?

Hi again, great Smiths pics Paul, one of their ERFs was TTT918X and that was ex Gregorys…please put some more on,Nathen yes mate you’re spot on and as Paul said the yard has been built on for several years now so you would’nt have seen it :frowning: ,heres todays stuff from me,Cheers Bubbs,

Unfortunately, Marcus, thats all of the Smiths pics I have - there was no more in the yard… Am I right in thinking that the new houses are called something like Smiths Mews? I’m sure they pay homage to the family somehow…

Nathan. The yard (and now houses…) was nearly opposite the Blue Bowl Pub on Hanham High St - terrible place to have a drink or three…

Gonna bore you with some more of Bonds today…

1st pic shows the original J9 fresh out of the paint shop…

2nd shows D619 FHY, new in Feb '87. March '87 was back in the workshop having a new cab fitted after an argument with a dumper in Tytherington quarry… :open_mouth:

3rd pic shows a proper bitzer  MLN was built from 3 scrappers! Bonds had a bit of a rush on and needed a lorry quickly so made one! she drove like a dream, finished the rush job and was sold on about 18 months later…

4th pic shows NAE 759Y, bought at 4 years old and was a nice little motor. Always drove well, went well and got you home - what else do you need?

5th pic shows C281 CTC,bought 2nd hand at 3 years old. Driven by an OD from new, she needed loads of work to bring her up to Bonds standards - not too sure if the 1st owner possessed a grease gun :unamused: She always went well and gave good service…

6th pic just shows an unusual view of tippers  Taken at Truckex Cirencester in '91 - cracking little show and glorious sunshine…

Anyone got any pics of Clive Winslows’ tipper fleet from High Wycombe? They’ve got a 4w Foden capable of carrying 12t, legally! :open_mouth:

Hey Bubbs, love this picture, well the caption really

A black and white photo of all the new colour schemes in the BRS empire

I have posted this one before but this is the site of Smiths yard at Hanham.

Muckaway. This must be your building with a statue known localy as Sally on the barn.

Cheers Phil.

Suedehead:
Any story behind the Channelflow Aecs, Vauxhall ha/ Ford Anglia van pic - cracker.

Looks like a Borehamwood address on the Angia van , wernt Bullens industial/ office movers ?

Refresh Thread Alert

I have just dug some old information out about Hewsons for another thread.

It turns out that Giltspur Bullens are still listed on the Royal Warrant as Housemovers By Appointment.

I also discovered they were based in Borehamwood and Windsor

Thanks for the pic of ‘The Old Smiths Yard’ Phil - I knew it said something like that

Bubbs. You are more than welcome  I haven’t got such an extensive collection as yours - far from it - but I have no problem sharing. After all, that is what YOUR thread is all about - perhaps its your turn to put all this into a book?

Norfolktrucker. Great pics, especially the Dodge 8-legger - I guess thats a conversion?

A few more from me - just a few random shots from a little known haulier

Piston Broke, re the C reg Bond Dodge; I had a look through the new edition of CVC and Hazel and Jeffries have one identical to it. Could it be the Bond one?
The “Sally on the Barn” is the building I was referring to. The job at Hanham Abbots was always done by me and another driver but when others had to go, we always told them “past the barn with the statue, around the bad bends, down the hill and turn left at the to the church sign”.

Great pics norfolktrucker, first time i’ve seen an 8 legger Lad cabbed Dodge  and I’ve been about a bit, ( thought I’d better get that in before Muckaway does. )

Hi Nathan

It is possible that its the same one but I would be very surprised - the cab rot finished most of them eventually. Not too sure about your age but back in the seventies and eighties if an operator wanted a cheap, light and generally reliable 4 wheeler there wasn’t a huge choice… As you know, tipper operators have always been weight-conscious so Dodge’s were very popular, especially in the quarries. That spec was a very popular one - Neville Charrold also had a deservedly good reputation for tipper bodies at the time. Bonds must have had 20 of the Commando’s over the years, the same amount of K1050’s, and a few D308’s and Kew’s. Saying that though, they never have any problem selling their lorries on - my old 6 wheeler went to the Herts area when she was 9 or 10 years old and ran for another 5 or 6… :open_mouth:

Henry Streeter, the west London aggregate merchants used to run 8 wheeler Dodge tippers, I’ve a feeling they were Dodge dealers. Don’t think they were factory built, chinese six and second rear axle conversions to cheap lightweight motors were common in the old days, not many operators went all the way and fitted both.

Yeah I drove a chinese six for a while for a guy from Swindon, and drove a normal six legger for Ameys, but as I said never even seen an 8 legger, must say it does look the part.

A couple more from the same stable as the 8 legger LAD, although probably not as rare

hiya,
Work in progress on the six wheeler where’s H&S, no safety prop, tut, tut.
thanks harry, long retired.

Piston Broke, I remember a few Dodge 4wheelers around here, but the lightweight 4 of choice around here was the Leyland Freighter, probably as there was a major Leyland dealer in Kidlington. Agree with your Charrold comments, we used them for years but switched to Charlton in '98 buying lightened “Groundhogs” and Charlton Superlites since theCF cabbed Alphas. Had quite a swear in the back of an old Charrold when the load clung to the dents and battlescars.
