What great old photos Bubbs, these two are old Wincanton motors with the logo “Wheels turn efficiently” logo.None of the milk collection wagons had names like the rest of Wincanton’s fleet.(I’ve got the book)
When I was working on a farm in Lincolnshire in 1958/9 Eastons used to collect the milk in churns and that firm is still going, they had depots in Alford Lincs and Bunwell Norfolk.

Hello again,Heres a refreshing change from my boring motorway shots,Retriever has sent me some old milk lorries to put on the scrapbook especially for John (Stanfield).
Ok ,No info on these pics but,how many of you can remember these old Thames…I was a little boy when my Dad drove one,I used to sit on the battery box between the 2 front seats when Mum was with us and Dad would let me lift the lever on the floor to start the engine.Another memory was the sheet would be chucked on top the cab when loading and as it was heavy the roof dented,in fact it was dish shaped. This would collect rainwater and the inevitable happened…it split…and on the passenger side,so I would be treated to an unexpected wash if it ■■■■■■ down .I would stick chewing gum in the hole(these things didnt come with a headlining) but that didnt work .Ok enough of my rambling heres the pics
Thanks again to Retiever.
Cheers Bubbs,
Hi Bubbs
I remember riding on the battery box in a 1956 4d with a luton body .I still remember how it vibrated. You bring back memories of the starting lever. Ours had a button and I remember going into Youngs main Ford agents at Chester le Street and they fiited the lever, which was a modification fitted under guarentee.
Did “Truck Pulling” for a little while, used this ERF with a 14ltr ■■■■■■■ with the fuel pump wide open! there was a video on youtube of it under the name “Borrowed Time” !
Started my driving career on a Ford 4D (Harrisons of Dewsbury) There used to be a very good cafe on the A62 at the Dumb Steeple, Bradley, had my breakfast one morning, came out , started the 4D and a rod came straight through the side of the block. Hmn.
those first couple of pics look like they were taken in, what is now the yard of Stobart’s at Chelford (formerly James Irlams) I do believe that it was built as a dairy board site (and IIRC the Irlams were a dairy farming family) but I think most of these sites looked the same of that era
Chris Hudsons used to be next door to us when I worked at Sampsons at Windsor Terrace Becton they had loads of those little 80s with unity sleepers on them also had two A series Ford artics with tilt trailers they also made the monoframe trailers there
As for the Mercs I only ever had that one is was the last of that model and came at a good price and to be fair did what it said on the packet as for the little Merc well couldn,t get TKs no more lol
