Pat, we’ve had this ’ discussion ’ before . Firstly, I’m glad that you finally seem to agree that I did see a very pea green Renault Magnum running with Dutch plates on I 285 around Atlanta last year, It was in Team Olive Garden Racing Colours.
Secondly, I do have some ’ rough ’ photos of it as I overtook it before it headed West towards Birmingham AL, so that will be proof, to counteract your original assertion last year that the Magnum cannot, will not and has not run over here. I hope to get a new scanner soonest, when I do, I hope to post the pictures with the help of Andy M.
As I believe our little disagreement over this issue of Euro Racing Car Transporters running over here was on the old forums, I’m going to ressurect it now that there are alot more members on these new forums, members who I hope will remember the article in T&D a few years ago, it was about a British registered Renault Magnum Racing Car Transporter ( it had a Red Cab) , along with another UK registered truck (Ford Cargo, I think? ) the pair of them spent about two weeks running around over here visiting various F1 racing circuits up in the Northern part of the USA.
One of the most striking photos in the article was of the Magnum being overtaken by an American Truck and the Magnum dwarfing it like the US Truck was a car coming past!
Thirdly, Over the years that I’ve been here, I have seen Euro Trucks on a number of occaisions, although mostly, it seems, I saw them in far greater numbers each spring when I was running Florida all week and almost every week during the five year period of 1995-2000. Contrary to your opinion on the old forums Pat . Over the years I have seen a number of Euro Trucks running up and down Interstate 75, sporting various European registration plates. In the late 90’s it seemed they were mostly Magnums ( the first Magnum I ever saw was over here! ) a number of MAN’s and Mercs were always in attendance too and occaisonally I saw Scania’s and DAF’s, the time of year was always around Feb-March, but it was awhile before I twigged they were here for the Sebring Races in Florida.
In fact the first Euro Truck that I ever saw over here, was, unlike the others which were always on the move whenever I saw 'em ( usually in the opposite direction too! ) …was seen and photographed by me in the summer of ‘94, parked in the Flying J Truckstop at the old exit 133 ( now exit 319, I think ) on Interstate 75 in Georgia, which is between Atlanta and Chattanooga. It was actually embarrassing to see it really, I remember thinking at the time, why could’nt it have been a top of the line Flagship? like the ones I saw in later years, and why did it have to be a British Registered truck?
I had only found out about it while listening to the CB, it was all the ’ chatter I was hearing ’ about the funny little truck, with the steering wheel on the ’ wrong ’ side, and the comments such as "I bet he has a hard time at toll booths " which got my interest fired up!, I tried to ’ ■■■■ in ’ to find out the source of the amusement, but could’nt make my ’ little ’ CB radio ’ walk’ all over the others, so being the nosey Sod I am, I went walkabout , Well, knock me down with a feather! sure enough there it was!, on the other side of the truckstop, I saw it, nestled between two bloody great ’ Large Cars ’ with 53 ft trailers, the source of everyones ammusement, despite being considerably shorter as a Truck/Trailer combination than the 53 ft trailers it was parked between it still had that quaint sign on the back stating ’ Long Vehicle ’ One of the things I remember was I could ‘nt get over how weird the big ’ balloon ’ tyres looked compared to the 22.5 lp’s we had on MS Carriers Trucks, I guess I had already been here too long, because looking at an Iveco Turbostar 4x2 Tractor coupled to a short 30 ft? trailer with the steering wheel on the right, tax disc on the left and a sleeper/parcel shelf that looked a hell of a lot smaller than I remembered, suddenly seemed as alien to me as I suppose it did ot the American drivers standing around ridiculing it! ( this was one time I did not want to be ’ British’ ), so I slunk away for a while , although I did knock on the drivers door later when no-one was looking , but got no answer, I even had the driver paged in case he was in the showers, still no luck, all I wanted was to have a natter, and find out the ’ ins ’ and ’ outs ’ about his trip over here.
So there are instances of Euro Trucks being spotted over here. Even trucks that might seem as unlikely as rocking horse ■■■■!
Not to forget the ERF EC 11, which I spotted back in '96 heading towards DC.
Or the F10 /12 although it could have been an F16 that was spotted by several British and Irish drivers around about 1993 in Tennessee. ( nr Memphis )
A Magnum was spotted two years ago Bobtailing in South Carolina by two British Drivers at different times who were unknown to each other, both said it was Purple in colour.
Here’s a thought , what if spotting Euro Trucks ( the ones that don’t belong over here ) became the 21st Century Ex-Pat British Truckers answer to the 20th century’s UFO sightings craze. Who knows what could be out there?, especially in places like the Arizona/ New Mexico Desert, maybe it could be our very own Munchman that will claim the very first North American sighting of an Iveco Stralis , now would’nt it be exciting if it was spotted in the vicinity of Roswell?
