Scania appears on HBO!

Being an avid Sopranos fan and not missing even the re-runs, even after all the times I have watched the programe it was only this past week (3 episodes a night) I have noticed that during the the start and theme tune sequence, a 143 Scania can clearly be seen crossing a bridge on the New Jersey Turnpike, it is there for a second or two, so you have to be quick :exclamation: But after studying at at legnth, it is most certainly a Scania. This could be because NJ has more Scanias than any other state and still has Scania dealers

What a sad, sad, sad life I must lead

Reminds me of the ERF EC11 I saw on heading towards the DC Beltway in Virginia back in 1996.

But unlike Scania, ERF never sold trucks over here, yes you’re right NJ does have the largest amount of Scannys and Scanny dealers, but there are several other places up North that have them too. We still see the occaisonal Scania down this way too.

FYI, Scania still maintain an office in Texas.

I have been reliably informed of Scanias along the USA side of the Mexican border, probably due to the fact that Scania have a factory down there.

OK :exclamation: I am wrong :exclamation: It’s more like a 141

Picky, picky…

Wonder what you’re drinking mate… next thing you’ll be seeing FH-12s and topliners

Is this the truck you mean Pat, I’ve been right through the title sequence and can’t see anything else that might be a Scania.

Looks more like a chuffing Ford Cargo to me! :open_mouth:

What you been drinking Pat? :unamused:

That or a hino/isuzu…

Dunno what’s up with Pat, but it’s obvious he’s got Scanny withdrawals…

never noticed a Scania myself…

Coffee, Thats not it :exclamation: That looks like a Merc to me :exclamation: All I can say is when I watch each time it becomes more clear and is plainly a large cab Scania, pulling a white trailer … I can’t say I ever noticed that Merc

Can you give me a clue as to which bit of the titles it is in, how far in or which name is on or has just been on the screen and I’ll grab a picture of it.

Pat Hasler:

Yes, thats all very well Pat, but you still have’nt told us what you’ve been drinking this past few days?

During the opening sequence there are a few shots of traffic crossing what looks to me like the southbound western section (Anyone who has travelled I-95 in NJ would know it splits into east and west sides) The truck concerned is shown in the very last shot of that bridge :exclamation:

I have looked at it over and over again and it is deffinately a Scania :exclamation:

The straight truck is a Hino/Isuzu and the cabover tractor is like an old Peterbilt or Freightliner. I personally don’t think it looks anythinb like a Scania…sorry Pat, maybe being in the US for a couple of years has clouded your judgement…!!! lol

It looks all out of proportion to be a Scanny to me.

More like a Renault Magnum.

Well :exclamation: It deffinately isn’t one of those :exclamation:

It’s not uncommon to see a Scania on the NJTPK, thats why I am sure of what I see

However :exclamation: A magnum … not in NJ, I think Cliff saw one in racing team colours last year down south, it must have been the only one in the whole of the USA.

Pat, we’ve had this ’ discussion ’ before  . Firstly, I’m glad that you finally seem to agree that I did see a very pea green Renault Magnum running with Dutch plates on I 285 around Atlanta last year, It was in Team Olive Garden Racing Colours.
Secondly, I do have some ’ rough ’ photos of it as I overtook it before it headed West towards Birmingham AL, so that will be proof, to counteract your original assertion last year that the Magnum cannot, will not and has not run over here. I hope to get a new scanner soonest, when I do, I hope to post the pictures with the help of Andy M.

As I believe our little disagreement over this issue of Euro Racing Car Transporters running over here was on the old forums, I’m going to ressurect it now that there are alot more members on these new forums, members who I hope will remember the article in T&D a few years ago, it was about a British registered Renault Magnum Racing Car Transporter ( it had a Red Cab) , along with another UK registered truck (Ford Cargo, I think? ) the pair of them spent about two weeks running around over here visiting various F1 racing circuits up in the Northern part of the USA.
One of the most striking photos in the article was of the Magnum being overtaken by an American Truck and the Magnum dwarfing it like the US Truck was a car coming past! :open_mouth:

Thirdly, Over the years that I’ve been here, I have seen Euro Trucks on a number of occaisions, although mostly, it seems, I saw them in far greater numbers each spring when I was running Florida all week and almost every week during the five year period of 1995-2000. Contrary to your opinion on the old forums Pat . Over the years I have seen a number of Euro Trucks running up and down Interstate 75, sporting various European registration plates. In the late 90’s it seemed they were mostly Magnums ( the first Magnum I ever saw was over here! ) a number of MAN’s and Mercs were always in attendance too and occaisonally I saw Scania’s and DAF’s, the time of year was always around Feb-March, but it was awhile before I twigged they were here for the Sebring Races in Florida.
In fact the first Euro Truck that I ever saw over here, was, unlike the others which were always on the move whenever I saw 'em ( usually in the opposite direction too! ) …was seen and photographed by me in the summer of ‘94, parked in the Flying J Truckstop at the old exit 133 ( now exit 319, I think ) on Interstate 75 in Georgia, which is between Atlanta and Chattanooga. It was actually embarrassing to see it really, I remember thinking at the time, why could’nt it have been a top of the line Flagship? like the ones I saw in later years, and why did it have to be a British Registered truck?
I had only found out about it while listening to the CB, it was all the ’ chatter I was hearing ’ about the funny little truck, with the steering wheel on the ’ wrong ’ side, and the comments such as "I bet he has a hard time at toll booths " which got my interest fired up!, I tried to ’ ■■■■ in ’ to find out the source of the amusement, but could’nt make my ’ little ’ CB radio ’ walk’ all over the others, so being the nosey Sod I am, I went walkabout , Well, knock me down with a feather! sure enough there it was!, on the other side of the truckstop, I saw it, nestled between two bloody great ’ Large Cars ’ with 53 ft trailers, the source of everyones ammusement, despite being considerably shorter as a Truck/Trailer combination than the 53 ft trailers it was parked between it still had that quaint sign on the back stating ’ Long Vehicle ’ One of the things I remember was I could ‘nt get over how weird the big ’ balloon ’ tyres looked compared to the 22.5 lp’s we had on MS Carriers Trucks, I guess I had already been here too long, because looking at an Iveco Turbostar 4x2 Tractor coupled to a short 30 ft? trailer with the steering wheel on the right, tax disc on the left and a sleeper/parcel shelf that looked a hell of a lot smaller than I remembered, suddenly seemed as alien to me as I suppose it did ot the American drivers standing around ridiculing it! ( this was one time I did not want to be ’ British’ :open_mouth:  ), so I slunk away for a while  , although I did knock on the drivers door later when no-one was looking :astonished: , but got no answer, I even had the driver paged in case he was in the showers, still no luck, all I wanted was to have a natter, and find out the ’ ins ’ and ’ outs ’ about his trip over here.

So there are instances of Euro Trucks being spotted over here. Even trucks that might seem as unlikely as rocking horse ■■■■!

Not to forget the ERF EC 11, which I spotted back in '96 heading towards DC.
Or the F10 /12 although it could have been an F16 that was spotted by several British and Irish drivers around about 1993 in Tennessee. ( nr Memphis )
A Magnum was spotted two years ago Bobtailing in South Carolina by two British Drivers at different times who were unknown to each other, both said it was Purple in colour.

Here’s a thought , what if spotting Euro Trucks ( the ones that don’t belong over here ) became the 21st Century Ex-Pat British Truckers answer to the 20th century’s UFO sightings craze. Who knows what could be out there?, especially in places like the Arizona/ New Mexico Desert, maybe it could be our very own Munchman :open_mouth: that will claim the very first North American sighting of an Iveco Stralis  , now would’nt it be exciting if it was spotted in the vicinity of Roswell? :open_mouth:

i remember reading about that magnum a guy going the other way turned round and caught up with it to make sure he wasnt seeing things  cliff this magnum sounds like your version of the black kenworth weve got over here whos spotted it where and when

Yeah, thats the article Carl!, finally, someone else who remembers it, If I remember correctly they even parked the Magnum in a truckstop to let American drivers have a look, I think thats where that driver you mentioned came back.

Back in 1996, International ( the Truck maker ) upgraded their Cabover range (can’t remember the actual model number ) but for about three months they had huges adverts in all the trucking magazines, it was for their latest innovation, so naturally they had a very large and bold statement at the top of the advert it made me laugh so hard I almost ■■■■■■ myself  …INTERNATIONAL! "THE FIRST FLAT FLOORED CABOVER IN THE WORLD " In the end, after having a ■■■■ good laugh with all the other Brits that were in the know, I finally got fedup with reading that load of old ■■■■■■■■, and wrote to them to point out that there is, actually another world out there, way beyond the shores of the USA, and if they had a quick peek they might see that the Europeans have had flat floored cabovers for years, ( did’nt the Berliet Cabbed Ford Transconti have a flat floor back in the 70’s?) the most recent model to sport this ‘wonderful new concept ’ that in 1996 International were bragging about inventing, was the Renault Magnum launched 6 years before International launched it’s ‘shed on wheels’. I guess I was’nt the only person to point out their very embarrassing and uninformed self proclomation, because about the same week I sent my letter, the next issues of the trucking mags were due out. I could’nt believe it when I saw the same adverts ’ the first flat floored cabover’ proclomation was very noticeable by it’s absence! and never appeared again in that particular series of adverts! It had to be other people who had called up International, because, American mags are put together about 6 weeks before the issue is due out, which was long before I finally decided to stop procrastinating, and put pen to paper!

I know about that Black KW, even added my two bob’s worth on that thread, it’s a good read, but you lot back home have got more chances of seeing Black or for that matter any other coloured KW’s than we have of seeing more than the very occaisonal " once in blue moon " Magnum etc…thats why I likened it to UFO spotting

I remeber a feature in either Trucking or Truck and Driver a few years ago about a Magnum that was shipped over from the Uk and toured round the US for a while. It was double manned as far as I recall but can’t remember exactly why they were over there, something to do with motor racing of some kind maybe. I’m sure in the article they were stopeed by the cops a few times, not for doing anything wrong but just because they wanted a look.
