Scammell Crusaders

andrew brick:

A Crusader could look really tasty if they were played about with, :sunglasses: :sunglasses:
Cheers Bubbs,

Hi, just looking at these photos and had to do a double take at the KW to see that it was a copy, what a great looking truck, wonder what happened to it, is it still around or bit the dust long ago ?. Must admit that I was always a bit blinkered at the time, driving a F88 and then a 111, but just wondering if I gave these motors true respect.
regards Andrew…

Here’s one lifted from the wreckers thread:

Any one know the history of this, presume ex army with what looks like a modified Crusader cab, taken on the Norfolk Broads this week-end

Is it all crusader or just the cab ■■

I dont know the make of crane but its not crusader or scammell, its just a motor panels cab, they were pretty much all the same sort of style to fit the Big j,Seddon,Crusader,FTF,S41 Foden and other makes that i cant think of right now, they would supply a cab to anyone i spose,i have also seen something done similar on another crane with a Scania series 1 cab.

As it is not a split screen, that looks like an AEC Mandator type cab upper.

no,ergo cab which i assume you’re referin to was by sankey which i think had something to do with or became Ogle who later went on to do the T45 cab ,not entirely sure if they are associated) with motor panels, honestly that is 100% motor panels, guy big j’s and the Seddon had a full screen, motor panels basically made a cab with panels to be applied to many sizes of cab for instance the crusader factory sleeper if you like is slightly bigger length ways than the FTF version which doesn’t have the cut out for the air boxes which was as far as i know unique to the crusader,Guy big J’s you could get a pigeon box add on as probably with some Seddons, im talkin the 32/4 and dustbin lorry cab for instance.they all share the same door uppers, hinges, side, rear and door glass, the MP cab is made up of many individual panels, all interchangeable on almost all of the cabs, thats how they are so easy to spot.
The cab on the 400,401,411 is a later version of the crusader cab im led to believe goin by the styling.
Also erf had some aswell on the MV which had a metal cab mainly intended for export but some ended up here as RHD models and a cab in the LV used an MP variant.
Im not an authourity on this, just what i have read, observed and being a crusader owner.

Just had a look on ccmvfotopic.net under Smith Cranes,i think thats the mystery solved.

Hiya …i worked at ERF and we made the mv/mw cabs from sections from motorpanels.
the crane has got Crusader roof panel. the doors/frames was pritty well all the same but these
are shorter the usual crusader doors.
At ERF we cut the doors/frams from a long door(bigJ /seddon) and made
them short doors(their was two different doors) normal or set back axle.Fodens had a short door
on their S 40,s .the back panels was (seddon/big J) with a 4"x2 strips to widen the cab.
the windscreen is the odd thing its too wide for a (bigJ /seddon) the Foden s40
has a split screen like the ERF… crusader and FTF.the windscreen maybe the same as the
IICsay the scania looking ERF european cab.The screen looks odd with the three wipers.
The front panel will perhaps be Seddon with a spacer in to make it full width.
John

Millers Recovery truck. I used to drive that and what that would not pull was not worth taking about.

V8 Scania and a real gear box. 18 Speed Fuller.

Sadly it was changed last yr and now has a Foden front end and a ■■■■■ engine ( Cat ) I think,

Peter

I wonder which of these is the earlier photo?

Found on the Internet, a Crusader playing it’s part in recovering a trolleybus from Johannesburgh:

I was wondering if anyone heard the rumour of the Crusader being discontinued because it was over eight foot two and half inches wide when measured at the front axle as the wheel nuts stood proud after a bod at a test station noticed and measured them and they were over, this was after about it being in production for 10/12 years. Looking at the photos on this thread they do seem as if they could be :exclamation:

Get “Carryfast” onto it Johnnie,he’s the thread Technical Director, however you might be no wiser after he has given you the “benefit” of his knowledge on the subject unless ,of course, the Crusader had to have a wider track to allow the DD engine to be fitted—and then we’ll never shut him up!!
