Thats one thing I remember about driving them, they seemed wider than most but whether they were overwidth I don’t know, more likely their demise was due to Leyland wanting to make one heavy i.e. the roadtrain with both Scammell and Leyland badges.
The front wheels had wide cast wheel trims, without them there was no way of climbing in the cab, skinned me shins on them a few times in the wet!

did they often load on the cab roof as well ?talk about the irishmen.
Hi,Gw Sissons and Son were the firm from Sherburn IN Elmet.I left school in1978 and started work as an apprentice fitter there. They had about 25 crusaders,2bigjs,2 leyland buffalos and half a dozen mandators. The crusaders were great to work on.The only problem was any jobs on top of the engine,it was really tight for space with them not having tilt cabs. They all had Rolls Royce engines.

I used to drive a crusader back in the 60’s for Elwood commercials in Newton Hyde, Pete Elwood had about 5or6 of them painted red, and had them on with freightliners. The one that I drove was bought by a young feller from east anglia and he put an american style west coast cab on it and only used it for shows.Pete kept one and turned it into a wrecker it was still in use up to a few ywars ago.

Rocky your memory is getting like mine the crusader did not come out until the 70s I think Bass Charrington’s had one of the first ones and the Samson was on a “J” plate and it was out before there was a lot in service that is the only way I can recall the time
cheers Johnnie
Hi,Artic Monkey where did you get the photo of the crocked crusader?I remember that one coming brand new,in fact there were two. apart from a second hand crusader(LAT 64P)they were the only ones with factory built sleeper cabs. All the rest were day cab conversions. They leaked like sieves!I used to spend hours sat on crusader roofs spreading filler on to try and stop the leaks. My mate Pete j from Tadcaster got that(JWY 987V)brand new if I remember correctly.
