Tidy as it looks. that Paynes Volvo is a bit of a sham isnt it ?

hi suedehead,
i have to say,i find you’r comments deeply offensive regarding richard payne’s f88.in my view it’s the owners perogative to restore any truck he owns as he choses.
regards andrew

Well i am sorry to offend, it was not intentional.
Thought that forums were for voicing views and opinions? . . and that was mine.
I have the utmost respect for people that devote their time, money and effort into restoring classic lorries to there former glory but i"ll wager that a Paynes motor never ventured to the M/E and that is why, in my opinion, its a sham(no offence)

hi m & c steve
peter was the only man i knew who could weld anything including water

MT, your not wrong mate.

Although working for Beckwiths in those days meant he had lots of practice of fusing rust together. Did someone mention Scammells there ■■

In answer to suedeheads question, I have restored 9 vehicles now. 2 which were my own livery, 1 which was in the original livery and I was even given help by the original driver, and the rest in period liveries of the era. I found when I used to goes to shows, people still pulled them apart. Ive got vehicles in the present fleet, which are one month old, off which 1 has had new bottom panels already, so to the purest there not original. I think as long as the vehicle is saved, whether its original or not, at least its saved and not just another vehicle going for export. The amount of vehicles I see coming through my depot for export everyday in ten years time there will be no 95/85 DAFS, 4 series Scania’ F12 Volvos, just look at the 3 series Scania and look how the prices have shot up recently, the average guy wouldnt be able to save and restore one of those now. So as long as its saved, thats all that matters and as for Richard’s and your own vehicle, I think they are both restored to a fantastic specification and in your own tastes.
As for suedehead, everyone is allowed to their own opinion.

hiya, whilst that is your opinion which i respect and is fair enough, but last year that lorry won 2nd prize in the Nordic trophy for veteran truck and this year came 1st in the same,Richard has won so many prizes for that lorry he has lost count of the trophys he has at home,it is always very popular wherever it goes an he has owned for 13 years now.
regards,Terry.

hiya, that was me,should of come over an said hello, just got home, had been to the nordic trophy in sweden.

I would have done, but the curtains were drawn on the Crusader so I assume you were sleeping.Or did you stay in the hotel across the road?

I assume that you live somewhere local to Coombe Valley too,I used to go and watch the banger racing there many moons ago. Many, many moons actually, probably mid 70’s.

Also see you have a pic of an old Young Bros.tilt behind the Crusader.I remember them on London Road, the old A2,in Faversham when they were running the Mack’s on middle east.I also remember them moving into Speedfreights old yard round at Dargate, obviously that was a long time before they moved to where they are now, next to the Lychgate filling station.
I lived in Yorkletts until 1979.

hiya, fair enuf, yeh, always stay in the lorry, yes my mums side are from St Rads and my dad had a crusader on Coombe valley from 78-80,been obsessed ever since i have.
The Youngs trailer YB1208 i bought and started to restore but got so far and had to stop, sadly 5 ali sideboards got nicked ■■■■■ ■■■■■■■■ probly,i have replaced them but now i have just 2 much to do so its kinda on the back burner now unless Richard Payne buys it,i keep naggin at im,they are still at Dargate behind that shell garage and kent trucks the Renault dealer is also there.

hiya MOC,thanks for doing the pictures, fell free to do as many as you like that have my lorry in, but i cant speak for anyone else who has posted their pix on there even tho ive put it down as public so anyone can see.
I hope everyone likes em,admittedly the CVT crusaders weren’t 6x4’s or had stacks and air intakes like that, but as a 4 year old at the time and a fan of American lorries also its how i would have and still do want one to look.
That lorry completely confuses foreigners, especially when i swing open the radiator and point out the Rolls Royce engine.
The trailer i run with it is 1972 Merryworth which i bought from a haulier in Clacton who used it for plant and tractors.
Coombe Valley Transport are still going and Martin Husk the owner has always been very supportive,Martin chose the shade of red and gave me the appropriate fleet number,an old fashioned haulier and good all round person,as my earliest memories are of Coombe Valley lorries doing this lorry in their livery is particularly significant to me.
Terry.

No problem Terry, theres some really good pics there, will sort a few more out and put them on here  Can see why your well into the crusaders, was shame about the pikys and the youngs tilt though :sunglasses:

Terry,Would Martin have anything to do with the old Husk of Dover?

Rgds,

David :unamused:

Hiya 5th wheel,Martin is John and Alan husk’s (husk of Dover) cousin, coombe valley transport was founded by Martins dad.Husk of Dover’s old place was on Coombe valley rd and c.v.t was and still is in Primrose road just behind. Husk is just a name which along with the Lydden Freight terminal on the A2 was bought out by Sealane/Star cargo in the late 80’s.
I learnt to drive in that yard, on sundays when it was quiet,me an my dad would go up there to wash his lorry and i’d drive the Metro round n round when i was 12.

Dos’nt Martin have any photos of the old CVT fleet. Im sure he must have some somewhere.

i got a couple of pix taken down the yard in the 70’s,will scan em when i work out how an put em on me facebook thing on the scammell crusader appreciation society page,so be patient please.

saw this one a couple of years ago

is it a crusader ?

Thanks MOC for putting the Syd Bishop Crusader pic on -one of my favourite fleets.I saw this Crusader in the late 70’s and it looked smart and sounded great with the Detroit engine.I believe Bishops ran it for around 20 years before replacing it with a Foden which has now been replaced by a Volvo FH16.
