Scammell Crusaders

hiya carna no i worked for JA WILKINSON HATFIELD PEVEREL

mother trucker:
S J BECKWITH CHELMSFORD ran a few,a lot of them had a home made sleeper pod on them copied of the original .they were made from fibre glass cast in a mould and done in there own workshop done by a chap called PETER cant rember his second name who worked for them on a self employed basis

The chap’s name was Peter Jordan, i knew him as a family friend since i was about 8 years old, many a time i have helped him repair his truck in his back garden. I bought my first car off of Peter too, a Ford 105E, brush painted as one would expect where Peter had been involved.

A very nice chap who could turn his hand to most anything and who never had a bad word to say about anything.

When Beckwith’s finally left their yard in Broomfield they relocated in Cordons Farm, Cressing, Braintree, which is where my workshop was located.

Steve.

I remember Scammell winter mornings!!!

Thanks to Bigriggordy for this:

Left my camera in the truck, but I’ll put a couple up at the weekend of the Coombe Valley Transport Crusader that I took this morning in the Autohof at Gr.Mackenstedt near Bremen this morning.
It was pulling a low-loader on which was a Scania 141,Italian,trilex wheels and all.

It was parked there along with H.E.Payne’s F88 and ASG 141.Also a Volvo XC-90 on Swedish plates with Eurowheels.com written on the side.

Thanks to Craig Wells:

I would have done, but the curtains were drawn on the Crusader so I assume you were sleeping.Or did you stay in the hotel across the road?

I assume that you live somewhere local to Coombe Valley too,I used to go and watch the banger racing there many moons ago. Many, many moons actually, probably mid 70’s.

Also see you have a pic of an old Young Bros.tilt behind the Crusader.I remember them on London Road, the old A2,in Faversham when they were running the Mack’s on middle east.I also remember them moving into Speedfreights old yard round at Dargate, obviously that was a long time before they moved to where they are now, next to the Lychgate filling station.
I lived in Yorkletts until 1979.

Tidy as it looks. that Paynes Volvo is a bit of a sham isnt it ?

Fair few at the Dorset Steam Fair today, I’l get some pics up when I can download them.

hiya,
Was talking to a pal of mine who was a driver for Glendennings for more years than enough he drove a Crusader from brand spanking new until it was sold it never missed a beat, he arrived in the yard one evening to find a guy had been hellicoptered up from the South, bought it and drove it back that same evening never heard about it again.
thanks harry long retired.

hi suedehead,
i have to say,i find you’r comments deeply offensive regarding richard payne’s f88.in my view it’s the owners perogative to restore any truck he owns as he choses.
