I wonder if it was more reliable in the Crusader with the better air flow for cooling which wasn`t possible with the ergo ■■?

Different Grill again 1st Ive seen with 3 slots above the word SCAMMELL

Does anyone have any information on this posted by Colin Knapp?

Apparently it came from the Guy factory on it’s way to Leyland

Not sure if I have posted this picture before of Mitchell and Robertson’s Scammell Crusader. It was their second unit the first one being a non sleeper. It was my first artic.

No information I’m afraid but it’s an ugly brute

Nmp

.

This is the last of 9, one " L " reg RR220 & 8 " R " reg RR280 operated by Armstrong Cork Co. from their Gateshead plant, firstly on day and night trunks then later on general distance work. They ran alongside 8 Magirus Deutz 256M19s from 1980 but began to fail and by the mid eighties had been replaced by a mixture of ERF B & C series, DAFs & Ivecos & this was all that was left, a sad looking example, but in 1987 the whole fleet was replaced in one fell swoop with Scania 112s which were a huge disappointment, but that, as they say , is another story. I always had a soft spot for my Crusader eve n when it was raining in on my right foot. To end on a high note, we had radios fitted but I never knew why as we couldnt hear them when the Big Roller was on song.

Two clues-

  1. A couple of inches have been gained in the grille area.
  2. It came out of the Guy factory.
Conclusion- it’s yet another of the missing 8LXB Gardner-engined Guys.
    Simples!
