Scammell Crusaders

Tomdhu:
Here’s one we supplied back in the 70’s. 6x4 with 8V71 and 9509 Fuller. This one was carrying around 45 tons of maize.

Don’t you just love the flairs? Those hub reduction axles didn’t half get hot at these loads!!

Now that’s what I call a proper truck and load [emoji7]
I know I probably wouldn’t want to drive it every day, spoilt by cruise control and air con etc but I’d love to drive it for a day.

Badged Leyland…and NO aircon!

Yes, we badged everything “LEYLAND” as out there as Leyland had a very strong brand image based originally on the 1950s Leyland Comet and later on the Beaver, Super Beaver and Super Hippo. All our Chieftains, Clydesdale s and Reivers were badged Leyland and they did very well. Leyland were market leaders out there.

Scammell weren’t too chuffed initially about being requested to supply “Leyland” badges but they came to understand the situation. We got on very well with Glynn Rees and Howard Barnes at Scammell and we gave them good business. It worked both ways.

No air-con was really needed as it was mostly at 3,000+ ft above sea level and it only got sticky around November when the rains broke.

WOW! That looks amazing. Lifting tag axle must have been a new thing back then no?
Sadly last taxed to the end of sep '93 [emoji17]
I’d swap my usual MAN for it in a heartbeat.

And a lifting axle on the trailer too! That is a very rare truck.

If you look back through this thread you should find several pics of this wagon (probably posted by me). It was particularly interesting / odd because it had an American-style Aerodyne roof!

EDIT: never mind, I can’t find 'em so here they are for your enjoyment! Robert

Apologies for the quality of the scan of the photo but this was taken in 1976 and shows 7 out of the order 14 Crusaders we dilivered with semi-trailers to one customer.

They had 8V71’s and 9 speed Fullers.

Stacked it:

I traded 896V in for a Scammell Roadtrain at Hargreaves of Pudsey, they then sold it on to someone called Hood in Bradford but unfortunately I never saw it again. Rocky 7 says he saw it painted red belonging to Pete Elwood of Hyde earlier in this thread. I would love to see pics of yours and any other information you have on it.

Give me a few weeks as I want to move it from where it is now down to Kent before it moves to Germany - where I live. Once I have all the sheets off, clean up a bit I’ll get some decent pics of it and post them.

Cheers

Here she is after a bath. Hope someone knows some history.

Stacked it,
Looks like a good project, is that the samson chassis in the background?

Yes it is.

By the way. Mine started on the button after 12 years standing. Very nice moment. Pretty sure it was a tanker as it has very complex wiring
