What a fantastic looking motor,
Made my neck hurt though:

Thought I recognised the reg. this motor was recently on ebay:

Sorry if it’s been on before, also sorry if anyone has copyright as it’s not my photo.
I was just thinking this is a scene never to be repeated, what with all the H&S nowadays

Regards. John.

Thanks to Nick Marrison for this pic:

Thanks to Duncan Osbourne:

Just been reading through this. I so wish I had been around driving in the 70’s. I’d love to have a go in one of these beasts.
I must find out for sure but I seem to remember when I was about 3 or 4 my dad parking one of these up outside the house before setting off the Iran with I think cadburys chocolate. Does that ring true possibly?

Quite a lot of Crusaders used to run Middle East but I have no personal knowledge to help you with.

Here’s one that looks like it went overseas from Matt Hayler:

Couple of lads i knew from Wellingborough used to run a day cab Crusader abroad, they used to love opening the bonnet and swinging the radiator out on its hinges, said it brought all the european lads out to have a poke nose and a chat.

The square cab Pegaso’s had the same thing a very underated truck & well engineered, the “cabtec” versions had problems but the Spanish are good pragmatic engineers btw I have worked on & driven quite a few, at one time back in the 70’s Pegaso built the most powerful production tractor unit [not special order] in Europe it was all of 350 bhp

Just in case any Crusader fans out there are looking for a new toy, this old girl was for sale at The Retro Show, might have gone now but maybe worth a phone call! Regards Chris

How about some pictures of Scammell Crusaders, here’s one to start:

The last time I saw JVM896V it was owned by Pete Elwood from Hyde in cheshire. It was painted red, and was on contract to RSM in Trafford park,on the containers.

All.

I have only just joined the forum so forgive me if I mess up.

I have been reading this thread with great interest as I have just bought a rather knackered Crusader for restoration. I spotted this photo and I might have bought a sister lorry to JVM896V- I am now the proud owner of a very rusty JVM 906V. Does anyone recognize this motor and is able to shed some light on its history?

Cracking thread by the way. I am pretty excited about finally getting my hands on one of these great lorries.

Cheers

Stacked it:

JVM 896V was originally supplied by Pickfords (now F&G I think) at Trafford Park, as I remember they had quite a few day cabbed Crusaders that didn’t sell so they were converted to sleepers (Jennings I think) - mine was one of those.

Thanks for the reply - mine also has a none factory sleeper that looks similar to JVM 896V but the V5 says the first owner was BEB transport in Stockport - can’t find anything on the web. But the fact that the regs are so close and the cabs look similar I am guessing they might be sisters. Do you know what happened to 896v?

I traded 896V in for a Scammell Roadtrain at Hargreaves of Pudsey, they then sold it on to someone called Hood in Bradford but unfortunately I never saw it again. Rocky 7 says he saw it painted red belonging to Pete Elwood of Hyde earlier in this thread. I would love to see pics of yours and any other information you have on it.

Here’s one we supplied back in the 70’s. 6x4 with 8V71 and 9509 Fuller. This one was carrying around 45 tons of maize.

Don’t you just love the flairs? Those hub reduction axles didn’t half get hot at these loads!!

Give me a few weeks as I want to move it from where it is now down to Kent before it moves to Germany - where I live. Once I have all the sheets off, clean up a bit I’ll get some decent pics of it and post them.

Cheers

That Edwin Shirley photo was at the Battersea yard.
