What could possibly go wrong ?

Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has launched a major restructuring and consolidation of its logistics operations which will affect around 7,000 staff, the retailer announced today (12 April).

The strategy will see 3,000 staff, who currently work for Sainsbury’s, transfer to one of Sainbury’s three logistics partners - DHL, Wincanton and GXO Logistics.

Another 4,000 staff, who currently work for one of the three logistics companies will move to another one of the partner businesses.

The restructuring will see different logistics contracts across the UK combined into just three contracts with each contract dealing with a different type of product.

In the past the business has had different contracts for different products in different locations. Now the contracts with its three partners will be nationwide.

Announcing the strategy, Sainsbury’s said it will "move to three dedicated partnerships across transport; food; general merchandise and clothing by the end of 2024, instead of multiple different contracts across the network.

"These network-wide changes will mean that Sainsbury’s can operate at a national level for the first time, as well as making best use of its partners’ expertise to provide better service and availability for customers, drive innovation and facilitate the sharing of industry best practice.

“The changes will also allow the business to invest further in modernising its logistics operations and improving customer service, in line with its food-first strategy.”

Sainsbury’s said that GXO will operate its contract to help run several fresh and frozen food warehouses, while Wincanton will deal with the transport operations across most of the network.

DHL will deal with the general merchandise network, which includes Argos, Habitat and Tu Clothing, as well as warehouses and transport for large general merchandise items for home delivery.

Wincanton ran a few of Sainsburys Warehouses and have lost the contracts for these - but picked up nearly all of the transport work where previously they only ran Northampton and Sherburn.

This is going to cause a few arguments transferring 1st and 2nd gen contracts to wincanton of all people. Then two year later after tupe has lapsed boom everyone is on a 2nd gen contract

Any one got some grease for the slippery slope to the bottom
And what no Marmite or Culina Stobarts ?

They’ll have put a ridiculous low price in and within 4 month they’ll be asking for a rate rise as they won’t make it pay,is what will probably happen, they’ll have the spare drivers and kit off the Heineken job they’ve just lost I would imagine though.

Stobbies will get in when the 3 musketeers mess up. Wait and see

I make that Thameside, East Kilbride, Bristol, Dartford, Northampton and Sherburn warehouses all moving over to GXO as well as Tamworth which they already have.

DHL keeping Worcester, Daventry, Marsh Lays, Stoke, home delivery and gaining some Argos

Wincanton losing all their warehouses but gaining transport

All the in house depots staying in house but transport moving

Didn’t DHL lose the Argos contract not that long ago?? Could have sworn they had.

DHL haven’t had the Argos store contract for around 10 years now. They still have the home delivery contract.

Oh for some reason I thought they had lost the home delivery a while back. Must be getting confused then in my old age.

GXO have got Argos, not unusual to see them pulling B&Q trailers between Worksop, Swindon and Magor.

GXO do the B&Q out of Redhouse as it’s an ex K&N job isn’t it?,I’ve heard of TK Maxx trunking work going to GXO from DHL and Wilko work at Worksop going to GXO from Wincanton, what’s the Argos one though?not heard that on the jungle bush yet…

GXO have had Redhouse B&Q transport for a few years now along with the rest of the DC’s, the warehousing is still Wincanton, it was never K&N but it was Norberts for a few weeks, K&N was a later takeover with B&Q units running out of Thatcham and Dagenham for a while, though that seems to have gone over. Argos got taken over by them about 6 months ago with random management moving between Swindon, Magor and Worksop, hence Wales B&Q deliveries being done out of Argos Magor and a lot of mixed units/trailers going around the place.

I always remembered the B&Q units having the K&N anchor on the bottom of the air deflectors years ago at Doncaster they took it all over from HAYS when it was down Wheatley hall road before they moved to Redhouse unless I’m dreaming

Are you thinking of Wilko?

Wincanton do all of Argos sites on the shop work and trunking DHL does the home delivery.

Wincanton lost the warehouse work for Argos, that has gone to DHL
