Hullo,
Almost, just along by Rotherhithe Tunnel they were, Purple, Yellow and White,
A bit of useless information. When you were in Dover a few years ago and waiting to clear or go on the Bank, you had to keep on going back to the Office to check your progress. This could be a bit of a pain in the Bum, because if you’de had a long run up, or if you’de been out on the p*** down the Albion, then turned in, you could wake up and find that they’de been waiting for hours for you to get onto a bay, either to unload or a turnout. You could lose a lot of time and of course ( Money ) through this.
Well Graham Manchester, either the Son or Grandson ( I believe it was the latter ) hit on the idea of installing a few SW Telephones, so he opened an Office in the Clearance Hall and rented out telephones to the Drivers. What a brilliant idea because when either DFG or DCS needed you for any reason, clearance, seal check, turnout or unload, you would get a phone call. I don’t know what happened to him after that, I never saw him again but the phone service continued for a long time, probably still does. I should think that he earned a good few Bob from it though.
Cheers, Archie.
Cheers for that Archie. I thought thay were dark blue. When i started out for W C WOOTTENS E14 i worked with a guy called graham who left to work for mancheters. heard he had a heart attack at 24.never heard about him after that. cheers mick.

This is going back a while, but my dad was born/raised in Stainsby Road, Poplar. my Grandad worked for P.G. Abbotts Haulage in Stainsby Road from the early 40s up till he retired in the late 60s. My dad left school aged 14 in 1938 & went on as a van-boy for P & X Carriers, in either West/East India Dock Road, he was called up in 1942 & was de-mobbed in 1947, he returned to P & X until 1948, then he & mum moved to Oxfordshire, where mum was from. When on P & X as a van-boy dad said he was not allowed to sit in the cab with the driver, he had to sit in the back(summer & winter) ready to jump out to do each delivery when the wagon stopped, P & X work was mainly parcel deliveries all over London, dad had an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of London, if you gave him a postcode he’d tell you where it was, most of this came from his time on P & X.
Nice story Chris sounds like lorry drivers knowlage of the day. cheers mick.
