Royal Mail, Norwich

Spotted an ad for Royal Mail drivers this morning in a city centre window. Rang up to enquire if there was any class 2 work on offer but unfortunately for me its all class 1. Not direct, but through HR GO. This outfit is Peterborough based, but has picked up this Royal Mail work in Norwich off the back of their R.M. contracts in Pboro. 2yrs exp. nights. only £11.10 tho (said it rises after 12wks, but make what you will of that) Just thought id let yall know! contact no is 01733 555455. Probably not worth trying to by-pass them but never-the-less, the depot number is 01603 627171.

You won’t bypass the agency by calling direct.

Pay does rise after 12 weeks to 16.26 p/hour nights if any 3 hours are worked between 11pm and 5am. Lots of different rates for different times.

Haven’t see many of their class 1 drivers in Norwich but the class 2 guys I see nearly every day do fly around a lot. There is a sorting office near the station.

About ten or fifteen years ago a lot was sorted to the South by train into London which has finished.

Aren’t a lot of RM workers (not necessarily drivers) ex Navy/forces?

You on for them or been on for them  if so what is the job like, how many hours a week, 40 would be a bit short.

I might even give them a ring,

RM drivers contracts are for 36hours 15 mins a week for just over 27k. That doesn’t include any night rates or area living allowances. With O/T 35+k is achievable. Clean easy work and always run legit.

There’s more 17t wagons there than artics… I’m surprised they are not looking for Class 2 drivers?

Also, RM “sorting offices” as opposed to Vehicle Operating Centres have a large number of 600’s, (7.5t) but no artics at all.

I get passed on the A11 by outward travelling RM double deckers, so I’m not sure if they’re based here as well, but it’s got to be worth phoning the depot just to find out what the score is surely?

True enough, buddy - nothing ventured and all that.

Annoyingly, the main obstacle will be the 2 year stipulation. Although ive had grandads on C1 for 37yrs, I only decided to up my licence category last year, having had enough after 25yrs as on-site joiner. I have completed my DCPC though, so that can`t do any harm.

Will sound `em out. Cheers.

Wrong. There are only 4 18tonners, 15 Artics.

Double deckers are based in Norwich.

You will not get any work unless you are class 1.

HRGO are just like any other Agency…just want you on the books. There isn’t enough work in Norwich VOC to give you a full weeks work, you may get 2 to 3 days. Thats all their (HRGO) drivers are getting.

To expand on this, there are various rates depending on the duty times, this is a way they compensate for NDA (about £90 per week for full timers)

Here’s how payroll is calculated for each of the 7 pay rates after you’ve completed 12 weeks of qualifying work (AWR), plus the overtime rate

Duty Ended between 21:40 and 01:59 = £15.24
Duty Ended between 20:00 and 21:39 = £14.64
Duty Started between 02:01 and 04:00 = £14.82
Duty Started between 04:01 and 05:00 = £14.47
Duty Started between 05:01 and 05:30 = £14.28
Duty Ended after 02:00 (regardless of Start Time) = £16.26
Duty Started after 05:30 and Ended before 20:00 = £14.09
All Hours above 36hrs 15mins = £16.83

When on AWR rates, there are no increased weekend or bank holiday rates
During your 12 weeks of qualifying there are enhanced rates for Sunday work

However, it must be noted that this is for Class 1 work only, there are separate rules and rates for Class 2 work and working out of mail centres. Mail centres do recognize weekend and bank holidays, so it’s possible to get a higher hourly rate than class 1 for doing 7.5 tonne work (7.5 tonne and 18 tonne are both classed as Class 2 for the purposes of pay rates)

RM are in the process of duty revisions, day duties are getting massively slashed
Duties starting between 3am and 5am are getting increased

Yes they do thats why they overtake going up A11 n/b on single carriageway and always doing 40mph - not! Oh and it isn’t RM that always fly past on dual carriageways doing more than 50mph - YEAH THEY ALWAYS RUN LEGIT!

Thats down to the driver. The company never ask you to speed or do anything illegal.

So the company does not bother with tacho analysis then■■?

Norfolknewbie:

And what would that prove? It will only show you the speed of a vehicle, not it’s location.

Has anyone ever heard of a company taking action for speeding by tacho evidence alone?

George@ASDA driver:

I was told that a recent O license inspection for a company on a main single carriageway road resulted in a warning by the TC that if the start and end of the shifts didn’t start more closely reflecting the speed limits then this would affect the O license liability score, or whatever it’s called. There are no dual carriageways or motorways for miles so it is (in this case) fairly easy to see how fast the drivers typically go. I have noticed this companies trucks doing 45 not 56 on the A7 now so it might even be true!

Asda normanton checked tachos of drivers doing Boston tips a few years ago and hauled a few in office re 40mph on a17

I often see a Parcelforce artic coming into Norwich, driving like an idiot.
