Romanian number plates

It looks like a foreign truck pulling a UK trailer rather than N.Irish, It’s not that uncommon now to see them have their own number plates on the back of our trailers. I’ve always wondered what they would do if they were pulling an UK or Irish trailer on the continent, what number plate would they use?

Talking of number plates, why is so many cars driving about on PL,SK,LT,etc plates.how long can they stay without paying VED, insurance etc

They need insurance from Day One…

Yes they do if the car is registered to a farm in some backwater in poland, but they live and work here full time

Then they need insurance from Day One. Just as I wrote first time around. Is English not your first language?

Yes my first language is english :unamused: are you agency or stobart driver

Ah,so can’t the hard working english man do that, say register it in the IOM and nip across for a day every six months

No, we can not do that, unfortunately. Actually, according the law, if they are live in the UK, after six month their driving license have to be exchanged by the DVLA. If you drive a foreign reg car with British licence in your pocket, the police can seize the car.
But I would have a big smile on my face, if the EU one day makes the insurance market and cheap insurers would kill the greedy ones in Britain…

not quite correct, you can drive on a e.u issued licence till you are 70, unless you exchanged a non e.u licence to get the e.u one, i.e Russian for say Latvian, then its 12 months, or up to 3 yrs if you have become full time resident in the u.k. and as most don’t apply for residency they can use their licence till they are 70. it use to be the other way but it changed a couple of years ago :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

Has anybody else noticed that their number plates are starting to look suspiciously British?

I.e our number plates read: AB10 ABC
theirs are starting to look the same as ours, just a white plate to the rear, saw one just the other day in wetherby services MM10 CSV, Seen one on the Wakefield 41 estate two weeks ago, AY17 FFR (I know we don’t have 17 plates just yet but this could be an issue in 4 years time)

On a similar note I saw an Audi the other day with ‘German’ plates on. Upon realising it was a right ■■■■■■ I looked at the plate again and it was a British registration number. A quick glance and no one would’ve been any the wiser.
It’s not the first one I’ve seen around here and there are plenty of SPECS cameras about- they are on every major road into the city. Are these two facts related maybe?

So why did you not understand when I said “They need insurance from Day One”? Alternatively, having apparently understood it, why the LOOB about cars registered to a backwater farm in Poland and those living/working here full time? They all have to be insured.

Yeh there’s a big trend of getting your reg “Dutch” style on audis/vws it’s a thing all the boy racers to, you’ll find them more and more common but they are illegal, just like putting them black silver regs on they used to have years ago

nope not from N.I. will be one of the right hand drive units from around the Dartford area pulling heritage trailers and the like registered in Bulgaria, clearly breaking the law as he is a foreign unit by not showing country of origin on the number plates and by using an orange background is hoping to pass himself off as a UK registered truck should anything go wrong. would be interesting to know when it last went back to Bulgaria

Ightly off topic but by rights the companys giving these hauliers work should be liable for prosicution as they are aiding and abeting breaking cabotage rules.

I’ve seen plenty of these before, normally Dutch or similar. Its just a foreign reg that has been made up on a UK number plate. Most likely running in the UK permanently with a UK trailer so had to have their own reg made up when over here as we’re the only country in Europe that doesn’t have permanent registrations for trailers.

or more likely running in mainland europe and can’t be bothered to explain to every ignorant copper that they haven’t lost the plate on the trailer… seen plenty
