Romanian number plates

Has anybody else noticed that their number plates are starting to look suspiciously British?

I.e our number plates read: AB10 ABC
theirs are starting to look the same as ours, just a white plate to the rear, saw one just the other day in wetherby services MM10 CSV, Seen one on the Wakefield 41 estate two weeks ago, AY17 FFR (I know we don’t have 17 plates just yet but this could be an issue in 4 years time)

my point exactly, the cameras don’t give two hoots if its a fiat Punto of FH16. All it’s does is read a number.

So when Mr Flip flop & socks is shooting through cameras and disappearing over the borders some poor sod with a corresponding reg number might be in for some grief?

You know what I mean, if flippy floppy egg stained Romanian clocks some points with one of these new number plates and some poor old biddies fiat Punto has the same number on the DVLA database, I’d imagine she’s going to have problems.

Do you think the Romanians have implemented this with ulterior motives?

Swedish number plates are the same as our old ones three numbers and three letters, have been for years and never had this problem.

This was reported in one of the national papers a few weeks ago, some woman being hounded for traffic offences committed by a Romanian car with the same registration as her UK car.

You don’t see many Swedish registered vehicles over here though, where as there are plenty of Romanian vehicles already and come next year I have no doubt there will be many more.

When I worked in Romania for a few years in the early nineties, I learned that the number plates start with the equivalent of our county, the two digit number was the area code and the last three letters were random.

I knew that bit of useless information would come in handy one day!!

I love that someone may actually think that the Romanian government sat down, and talked about changing number plates, then someone says 'I know, let’s copy the British so our trucks don’t get fined, British cars will instead ’ and they all go, YES, let’s do that!

After all, Romania is only next door, and no matter what the number plate they still can’t fine foreign trucks from cameras, so yeah logical I suppose… :wink:

This thread is a perfect example of why care in the community doesn’t work.

I think you will find the Romanians had there system in place long before Swansea’s finest had even thought of it.

So no I don’t think the Romanians chose it with ulterior motives. Although there is enough of an argument to say that the DVLA decided to use that system to stir up racial hatred.

Yeah I remember that was it the “Mail”?, never mind the cameras, APNR etc there must of been human involvement before a penalty charge notice was issued what sort of jobsworth idiot would sanction that! Romanian plates have a different style numbers & letters(black on a white background) the clue could be the blue margin on the left with RO in it :exclamation:
