Aye the old S18 Foden with the speedo in the center of the steering wheel, & most likely a top speed of 30MPH, With the old oil boost braking system that only worked when the engine was running, I bet some of the oldies that drove them had a lot of white knuckle rides Eh, Happy days long gone, Regards Larry.

Dave the Renegade:

A common sight on the roads in the 1960’s.

dad had a truck mixer , Leyland buffalo six legger in 1975 as his first motor [as an owner driver] and me uncle bob had an eight legger flat , would that be a Leyland octopus ■■?

Could have been ?But possibley it may have been a Constuctor ■■?, Regards Larry.

theres no getting over the fact , old motors have so much more character and identity than new stuff

Another from the same era.

Cracking photo Dave, two fuel tanks , just up my street Landsend to Johnogroats without having to fuel up Eh, I would love to drive something like that again, I wonder if it had a 12 speed Foden Box, Music to my ears, Happy Days, Regards Larry.

Evening all, very similar to the one I drove for the family 63/65, S20 cab, 4cyl Gardner, 5speed, with a box body. Speedo in the centre of the steering wheel, and if I remember right 42mph on a good day! Took me all over the UK, then France, and Italy many times, only ever let me down once! Hardly ever used any diesel,I used to varnish the cab wood, really loved that lorry.

Then I was promoted onto a “Micky Mouse” S21, unit, 150 Gardner, 12speed…so much power…and a gear for every occasion…but the cab lacked the quality feel of the S20.

Happy memories, Cheerio for now.

Thats an Albion Reiver.
Cheers Dave.

Mebbe not quite the type of rigids you were thinking of but here’s a couple one from the 60’s and one from the 80’s
Cheers Tyneside

any pictures welcome

Roberts Transport of Knighton Radnorshire ran several of these in the late 1960’s and in the 1970’s.

These in the guise of Austin,Morris or BMC were a much underrated lorry in my opinion.I drove a FHK 140 with the 5.7 under-slung engine for 10 months for S W Brisbane of Knighton,Radnorshire and it would pull like a train, much better than the Bedford TK and other cheap lorries of the time.

a few I got off internet

A proper working lorry, just looking at that motor shows that lorries did a lot of work long before all the modern stuff was thought of.
Cheers Dave.

Missing the back end of this AEC at Welland show.

They sure were ERFs were a popular motor in those days on Tyneside, Regards Larry.

Always loved the A.E.C , one of my earliest truck memories [dads mammoth major ] looked enormous to a 5 yr old
