From the link According to government statistics, ex-offenders in full time employment are up to 9% less likely to reoffend when released and more than 90% of surveyed businesses who employ prison leavers report they are motivated, have good attendance and are trustworthy. 9% ? Doesn’t seem like much, but that’s 9% who’ve had a chance to sort their life out, so I’m all for that
Also One of the businesses involved in the campaign is O’Neill & Brennan, a recruitment and logistics solutions business to the construction industry. The company has helped around 180 prison leavers into employment with its scheme in the last two years and currently employ over 60 prisoners released on temporary licence to work on-location each day. Barry Mitchell, O’Neill & Brennan logistics operations director, said: "There is a lack of skill and talent in the industry currently and we are finding that there is a huge gap in the retail and logistics sector, particularly in entry level roles.
The underlining is mine. So, to translate “There’s already a load of bucketnuts behind the steering wheel, why not try some ex-cons? How bad can they be?”
That’s why you need to know how to read statistics, the numbers they shout about are by themselves are only a part of the story.
It’s not rocket science that if someone can’t get a job then they can’t very well support themselves - legally - and it’s more likely they’ll re-offend. But this won’t do anything for those who are brought up in an environment where offending is “just the done thing”.
I’ve worked with a number of lads who have had a sojourn (some brief, some not so brief) at His/Her Majesty’s Pleasure, it didn’t mean they were necessarily bad people.
I’m all for training prisoners with trade skills so go for it. I mean, it would be better if we taught kids trade skills instead of teaching them woke nonsense and them turning 18 with no discernible skill other than being able to use a smartphone. We need plumbers, electricians, hgv drivers, mechanics etc. If we can teach people that in prison then yes do it.
My dad spent 5 years in prison roughly and learnt nothing. He came out and could not read or write but managed to get a job as a street cleaner. I think more can be done to reduce repeat offending.
That being said… I have worked at many companies because I have a low tolerance for ■■■■■■■■. Each firm that had a warehouse to wheels scheme often had warehouse guys who would try driving trucks for a few months… sometimes weeks and decide it is not for them. The vast majority of jobs you start at a certain time and you finish at a certain time. There is no mandatory overtime. The concept of starting a shift and not knowing if you will be out 8 hours or 15 hours is foreign to them.
I don’t blame them of course, management like to sugar coat what being a HGV driver is like… and as someone who has worked in the warehouse we often made fun of HGV drivers for being lazy and not wanting to take a load of drops. But yea, when you actually start doing the work… Not everyone is capable of it.
I’m definitely all for rehabilitation, but come on, not all of these guys will be the type who just did a daft thing once,.or a lad down on his luck who ■■■■ ed up.
I’m maybe stereotyping here, and I may get some flak, but I would reckon those type of guys mentioned inside will be in the minority, most of them will be tea leaves and general scrotes who see crime as a way of life,.and see nothing wrong with that…
So I just hope those running the scheme are selective, because our reputation now is one point above dog crap as it is with the public, ok, granted a lot of it is deserved because of the f/wits in the job, but ffs this is hardly going to improve perceptions or PR is it.
I suppose when I think about it I could not gaf anyway how we are thought of, but you know what I’m getting at.
Yes, I get where you’re coming from: “Oh you’re a lorry driver, what were you inside for?”
People make massive assumptions all the time based on miniscule amounts of knowledge, and this is exactly what will happen.
It’s like saying “I’m a TV presenter”
“Oh, so which kind of ■■■■■■ pervert are you?”
When you see in the media some of the things people do and not get a custodial sentence then it’s not unreasonable to assume that the ones inside are serious villains indeed.
I don’t think you’d get sent down if you buggered the judges daughter while wearing a get brexit done T shirt in their living room. Not unless you blocked off Wimbledon on the telly.

Fair point, except a large number of people are in prison for what is known is “victimless crimes” (an oxymoron if I ever heard one) such as non payment of parking fines, council tax, electric or gas bills etc. Smack a pensioner for their pension and you’ll walk free, but stick one into the establishment and you’re doing bird.

Even plumbing and electrics are getting that easy to do nowadays with evolution that that is getting to a stage where a monkey could do it.

Well you could easily teach a monkey to drive a modern truck,.all or most of the skill has gone out of it to what it once was…apart from maybe reversing.
(In fact when I look around,.they actually HAVE trained monkeys to drive them. )
There used to be a world of difference between driving a car and a truck,.where as nowadays you are basically driving a big car that bends in the middle, but the monkeys still drive them.as they would a car,.and there lies the problem.
So imo prisoners learning a ‘skill’ will be a non starter, more of a procedure than a skill.

Yep the Establishment take a dim view of somebody challenging them and taking their system on,.especially if the challenger appears to win,…and worse so if he is working class.
Well it’s a certain fact that the cons who end up driving trucks will be small fry criminals compared to the ar5e wipes at the top who are rotten to the core and utterly bent.
