Proud to be British?

Monarch of the highway in another post said that I couldn’t be truly English and proud. Well he is half right , I am British.
But I am not proud , what is there to be proud of ? . We live in a land where a working man is treated with disregard and disrespect by our bosses and by our government , We have a say on the coloured tie our leader wears but have no say on the decisions they make . The only thing that I’m thankful for is my education.
When there is a tradegy involving non British almost immediately a 1000 social media pages spring up justifying Britishness … So what makes you proud to be british

My Queen. My postage service. Our Justice system. Our heritage and history. The NHS.

Emergency services are the best in the world if the cows fall in the sluurry pit they get on with the job and hose down after cracking jokes.

The queen us just a showpiece, the postal service is about to be sold probably to a foriegn country and has the worst lorry drivers imo, the justice system works if your rich , our history is of warmongering and slavery… agreed our nhs is worth shouting about

The fact you can ■■■■■ and moan about how crap the country and its leaders are without ending up working in a siberian salt mine or been warer boarded is a pretty good reason

The British postal service is still the best, when you can send a letter 830 miles for 60p and it is there the next day.

Our Queen, and our warmongering heritage brings in some much needed revenue.

And I agree with the last post, try saying this in parts of Africa or Asia, you would be in the pot with rice and onions

Most countries have free speech , but is that a good reason for patriotism?

Watched an old shipmate race in the rain at Oulton Park last weekend. Drove through the fantastic Lake District and Borders for my work today. Had a laugh with my mates in our local Pub on Friday night.

Britain is my home and I’m proud to be British,

Try saying the wrong thing in the wrong part of Britain and the same thing would probably happen here that’s if the law don’t arrest you for being a racist first. :open_mouth: :smiling_imp:

Our history is one of war mongering but we’ve often lost as in the case of the Romans and the French. In which case it seems to be a case of a load Romans running the place before a load of Germans took over who then got kicked out by a load of French invaders from Normandy.Who were masquearading as Vikings just to make the Brits feel better about being beaten and ruled by the French and their descendents. :open_mouth: :smiling_imp:

Whereas now the place i warmongering but it doesn’t know what it’s warmongering about.Being that it’s fighting a load of the so called ‘enemy’ in foreign lands wher that so called ‘enemy’ belongs while at the same time welcoming that so called ‘enemy’ into the country with open arms.In which case it’s anyone’s guess how proud anyone with any sense will be of the place when the immigrant Asian and African communities form the majority.

As for the NHS it’s actually a case of running a socialist based, rationed health system, that’s running in the red because it’s given less funding than it actually costs to provide a decent service. All to save the employers and the economy the money which would be needed to actually pay for it.Which is why the thing is doomed to failure in the long term.

Having said all that the British Isles is home and it’s where my ancestors orginate from and who said anything in life was ever going to be perfect. :bulb:

Well that’s another thread ruined by caryfasts endless ramblings. Christ sake man, what is it with you? Are you paid by the word?

I spent 21 years living In the UK & I’am proud of that fact… Don’t live there now & not sure that I’d ever move back…

Proud to be British?

No.

Our foreign policy history has made us second only to the U.S. as the most hated nation on earth.

To be fair being hated by many/most of those who hate us is nothing to be ashamed of wether it be the Germans and Japanese in WW2 or those in places like Iran today. :bulb:

Forgetting about WW2 who would have cause to hate us today, other than those who’s stated aim is to wipe Israel off the map or at least those who don’t recognise the right of Israel to exist as a sovereign state and/or those who regard anyone who doesn’t believe in the Islamic religion as being infidels and thereby being subject to Sharia sanctions regards same  .

Hm… Let see… Solly mentioned your “foreign policy history”. Who could you angered in your past by going there, occupying other nations, milking them (or in some cases even using as slaves) then living the impoverished countries that were barred from progressing for century or more to their own fate? For making native inhabitans of the whole continents second category citizens? Who could blame you for that?

Half of the Africa? Native popilations of North America, Australia and several isles on the Caribeen Sea and Pacific Ocean?

Many of these settlers and colonists had been forced out of Scotland, while some had been driven from Ireland, escaping from centuries of continuing oppression and periodic famine. Convicts and political prisoners were sent off to far-off gulags for minor infringements of draconian laws. Soldiers and sailors were press-ganged from the ranks of the unemployed.

Then tragically, and almost overnight, many of the formerly oppressed became themselves, in the colonies, the imperial oppressors. White settlers, in the Americas, in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, Rhodesia and Kenya, simply took over land that was not theirs, often slaughtering, and even purposefully exterminating, the local indigenous population as if they were vermin.

The empire was not established, as some of the old histories liked to suggest, in virgin territory. Far from it. In some places that the British seized, they encountered resistance from local people who had lived there for centuries or, in some cases, since time began. In other regions, notably at the end of the 18th century, lands were wrenched out of the hands of other competing colonial powers that had already begun their self-imposed task of settlement. The British, as a result, were often involved in a three-sided contest. Battles for imperial survival had to be fought both with the native inhabitants and with already existing settlers — usually of French or Dutch origin.

Yet you picked only WWII (after all, that is one of the few conflicts in your history you were involved where you were without any doubt the “good guys”) and Iran, today’s whipping boy.

NOTE: I have no time to involve in another pointless discussion on history with you. Each country has some black pages in its history, even Poland that you value so low was no stranger to conquering, we once stretched from Baltic to Black sea and we were the only one ever to capture Moscow. I don’t see any reason to be ashamed of the country past, or proud for that matter, I believe we are all individuals, we have no choice where we are born and what was going on before we were born and for that reason I have no opinion of being proud to be British (or Polish, or any other nation) as I simply don’t understand that.

I read such threads as I like to know British people better, and I just laughed when I saw you in that discussion serving the typical ■■■■■■■■ of yours and I wanted to share that laughter with others. That’s it, I am off

Yeah right in your world Australia,Canada, and New Zealand would all be much better off now if we’d have left the places to the natives instead.

I don’t think I’ve said that the British have always been right in the past ( especially in the case of some of the actions of it’s German ruler’s redcoat army during the 18th and early 19th centuries ) amongst some other ‘issues’.But,as I’ve said, that was all outweighed by Britain’s finest hour during the 1940’s.Maybe we should have just declared ourselves neutral like Switzerland,Spain,Sweden and Ireland thereby saving ourselves all the aggravation and money and let the Germans have the place. :unamused:

Although no surprise you didn’t answer the question in that I said who would have cause to hate us ‘today’,as I said, with the exception of those who who want to see the removal of Israel from the map or who support Sharia law in regards to ,who they view as,infidel non believers in the Muslim cause.

That’s ■■■■■■ this post then!

White people, descendants of European settlers surely have a good life in their own way. But it was the right of the natives to decide how they want to live.

Becouse the precendent was talking about history. As for who hates you today, you are so high-thinking on yourself, that the discussion is pointless, if you can’t see these most obvious cases already mentioned in this thread it’s no point to giving you any more examples.
