Hi Fellas,
The Harry that you mention at Coultons wouldn
t be my Dad Harry Hedley by any chance would it?
He went there from Cannings in late 69 early 70 and drove an AEC Mercury artic. His motor was in the 1970 Leyland Festival.
Coultons ran a mixed fleet as I remember of two AEC artics, three 24.01 Leyland Octopus
(two tanks and a flat) on contract to Ribble Cement in their colours, a chinese six Leyland Steer and an early Scammell Routeman. There was also a rotten old Diamond T wrecker parked in the corner!
The Driver of the other AEC artic was Don Mc iever, a brummie lad who went their from Cannings at the same sort of time as my dad.
My Dad left in about 1972 and went to Ferrymasters on the docks.
Does any body remember our lorries? Hedley Bros Ltd, me and my brother Chris, we packed in about 15 months ago.

Hi 240 Gardner,
I don`t think that Preston has as much sunshine as Malta .The second Chris Miller Seddon Atkinson differs only from no cab roof beacons and having a black background on the " Big A "
badge. Thebox
on the trailer appears to have been fitted to a chassis in its earlier life.I think that someone has already posted a similar photo of this S.A. on here , but I can`t remember who, or which thread.
Cheers, cattle wagon man.
Some I found in my Earthmoving/Crane photos, may be of interest!!!

Yes I know they are not PROPER trucks, but still part of the Preston history story

Hi night runner,
Yes that’s the guy Harry Hedley, I remember it clearly when I see it in front of me !!! Lol ! I also left Coultons to go on Preston Docks although in my case to Containerway & Road Ferry !!! You’re right about a "mixed fleet " it wasn’t the description I would have given it though but you have to experience the crap before rising to the cream !!! Lol ! I sat in with “big” Dennis when he was on HGV “L” plates on the Scammell, good times but only to look back on !!! Your Dad was a real nice guy always got a smile on his face & a good laugh !!!

Hello Martin,
Glad to clear that one up for you and thanks for the kind words.
I remember the Leyland Steer in particular because we moved house with it. My Dad had organised an empty container from Greenore I think and when they went to collect it there was some mix up and he never got one. Needless to say, we had to move with all our stuff roped on the back using Commercial motor magazines that hed brought home for me under the ropes. My Mother was mortified, as "the new neighbours would think that the Clampitt
s were moving in"!
A couple of years later we moved out to Kirkham and my Dad had organised an a container and trailer from Ferrymasters and his good mate Wally Crowe dragged it for us with his Atki unit. The night before we moved, he had my Mum sweating for about four hours having told her there wasn`t a spare empty box available.Yeah my Dad was always up for a good laugh!

I think if my memory serves me right the photos were taken in Chris Miller’s yard, Cannot remember how I found it, usually by luck!!!
Other photos following, first two in Preston, rest on industrial site near Grimsargh (1988), Lance Biscomb country and I am sure the Volvo is one of his, but unlettered. Can kick myself now for not taking a photo of the old Volvo F88 in the background. Hindsight, what a wonderful thing

Yes, the F12 was one of mine. The 142 E404 was a Wolstenholme along with B90TFV who had just been bought out by Sam Longson, that is why the ERF is in the yard. C403FBV was owned by my good friend Chris Bolton, last owner of most things! CWT221Y was owned by Gerry Pye part of Preston Roadways, and is still in the yard today and now runs a MAN. The Iveco in the background belonged to Tony Lee a subbie for Ridings. The 142 with a tipper on belonged to Ian Bagot (the Black Shadow), who has just been back to the UK recently for a holiday after emigrating to Australia 18 years ago. The F88 in the background was Uncle Harrys who subbed for Ian’s dad, Gordon. The KM is Whalley Meats.

We had C407FBV @ Ditchfields.
Cheers Welly.
The photo of my 142 was taken in Richard Pye’s yard on Roman Way ind estate, was an early photo as I had a bull bar on it for a long time. Most of the others were taken in Lance’s yard. The brown F88 was Uncle Harry’s but my Dad bought it off him when he packed up .

Not sure if I,ve asked this before, but when I worked at Baxters on the Grange in Warrington we had Pandoro coming into us every day in the 80,s . One of there divers was an oldest guy called Tommy really nice guy I,d heard that he had been in a accident and had had a heart attack at the wheel over on the Wirral , not sure where he was based not Fleetwood I,m sure. Anyone know more
Would you be thinking of Tommy Farrell, who died in an accident at the old ‘Hellfire Corner’ near Singleton, between Kirkham and Fleetwood? He was driving an almost new 400 Series on an S-plate, so probably around 1979.
Pandoro of Fleetwood
McWilliam:
Pandoro of Fleetwood
Fleetwood depot motor, driven from new by Lew Wilson, as I recall

240 Gardner You may be right about the name but the dates are wrong I started at Baxters in 1979 and in them days Foleys pulled B+I trailers into us, It would have been poss 82/83 at the earliest I would have thought, but its a long time and I think they ran out of Wigan

I left in 1982, and Tommy Farrell was definitely driving an almost brand new S-reg 400 Series - fleet number 324 for anorak points!. His accident was a very short time before the SIngleton by-pass was built, and which probably opened around1980, so I’m confident of the date of his incident. A depot was opened in the old BRS site at Kitt Green not long before I finished (perhaps within 1982). Tommy was Fleetwood-based, although I think he lived in Preston.
