Hello Everyone,
What happened to Cannings Transport, when we used to deliver the 400,s to them in the mid/late
seventies they seemed to be a large succesful company, new premises , new fleet, bulk powder tankers etc
Curious to know what happened.Same question for Naylors Transport.
Thanks
I remember meeting James Canning about 1985, at which time they ran 45 vehicles, from memory. It seemed to me to run like a larger company than it actually was. When I was shown some of their rates I didn’t give it much of a future and, very sadly, was proved right. It was the only time I ever met Mr. Canning, whom I liked, although my cousin worked in the office there for many years.
There was a short-lived re-incarnation as Canning Distribution, and which I think was under different ownership
So the next Preston haulier.
Viking transport and Gemel ttransport?
So come on Mr 240 soon to be called 320 Big cam lol or Big Al

Yes, I remember both the names, although the memory is fading! Something slightly unsavoury, perhaps??
Here’s one for you - Sutcliffe, pulled for B+I. I think they used to be down South Meadow Lane somewhere.
Or how about this? Bleasdale’s at Farington:

The second picture would have been one Sunday after doing a regular job to Manchester markets with pigs from Ireland, the picture is taken along the A49 at Coppul at what used to be the white house filling station better known now as buy a bike.
Big Al:
Two more Ian, perhaps you can give some info on these pictures.
The F12 was taken at Hollyhead docks a regular job transporting live newspapers, the little fella at the front is my lad Scott who like myself used to love the days out.

Hi Pete thought I had not seen their distinctive livery around for a while, I might pop up there myself. I don’t know how many readers of this thread are aware of The Long Haul Club founded in 2005 by road transport enthusiasts but there is a meeting on this Saturday the 21st at 1900hrs . It will be held in the Boddington Pavillion at Guy’s Thatched Hamlet which is on the Old A6 North of Preston post code PR3 0AE. The guest speaker will be Tony Hawkridge and the subject "Lorries of the 40’s 50’s and 60’s " There will be a hot pot supper served and all members and guests will be welcome, a good chance to tell tall tales, listern to even taller ones and smell some good old diesel fumes. regards Big Al
Here is a blast from the past Mr 240 and Big Al
Do you Rember Barons and Wilf Griffith’s both from Leyland?
Barans ran some Leyland Interstaters and giffs ran 1 F88.

At his peak, Frank Baron was running a fleet of 5 Leyland Roadtrains, all on sub-contract work for W. H. Bowker. 3 of the lorries were ex-Leyland demonstrators, in “Team T45” livery, or similar. Sadly, I’ve found a little note in my anorak pocket which reminds me that they were D706, 708 and 709 RRN. 706 and 708 were Interstaters. I can’t remember details of the other motors, but I’ve a feeling that a 4th may have been ex-Leyland too.
Mr 240 Sir.
All I rember is the last 3 letters on Barons number plates being RRN on the interstaters.

By the time you read this Alan, you’ll have figured out that I didn’t attend. Too much water has flowed under the bridge for me to get involved again I’m afraid. Of late there have been some rather divisive influences at work around the LHC, who only ever seem to want to put things down and pick fault. At one time, I’d have gone toe-to-toe with them in an instant, but I really don’t need the hassle any more. Time & again I appealed to the membership for stuff to put in the newsletter, but it fell away to almost nothing within 12 months. That was my cue to look for something else to do.
Can’t ever remember Tom attending a LHC event. He did a slideshow with me up at Fence for Dave Weston though. I think you’re referring to the Bowker slideshow that Chris did at Croston - Tom was at that one with Bill & Ken Bowker, along with the biggest turnout I ever saw at one of those do’s. That was the ‘zenith’ of that particular club’s existence. Those who know what happened soon afterwards will know why the single quotes were used…

Well Marky I attended the LHC, we had a great night, Tony Hawkridge was the guest speaker, you might remember him from Heritage Commercials with his stories from working for York Hauliers, especially Elliots. He gave a very interesting talk and slide show on British Lorries of the 40’s 50’s and 60’s. I clearly remember Tom Riding attending at least one meeting at a Hotel in Croston and he defineatly was there this evening because I spoke to him. The meeting was well attended and The ■■■■■■■■ lads (even the Cockermouth Brigade) made it despite the flooding up there. I really enjoyed the evening got my fix of diesel fumes to keep me going till the rally season kicks off at Kirby Stephen. regards Big Al
