Political discussions...

Bearing in mind that Starmer regards our former Cold War enemies as his Comrades.

LOL, you’re too random for words.

Why would the PM not like Lynyrd Skynyrd’s MOR/soft-rock classic?
Do you think the lyrics to “Freebird” have some kind of relevance to anything in the UK political landscape?
Do you think the PM reads TN? you must do if you think he’d be upset by your post.
Even if he did, would anything you post do anything other than make him wonder why he’s even looking at this page?

Given (every truck driver’s fave policitian) Big Nige’s well publicised Spotify playlist, and his love affair with The Donald and the US political scene, could I upset him by posting here the Arctic Monkeys mickey-take of people who aspire to be seen as Americans?

Got to say…why don’t these pathetic pc lefty types just f.right off.

Do they think in their narrow tiny minds that it makes these people more acceptable to us by euphamising them from 'Illegal immigrants to, ‘irregular’ immigrants?
How many people do you know apart from these f. ers, that refer to them as that?..
No me either.

The only way they could be described as ‘irregular’ is if they dont take a crap every morning…in the meantime they are ‘ILLEGAL’ ie broke the law to get here ie should not even be here.

Ffs why do these type of ■■■■ s annoy me so much.:rage:

Regardless of the subject matter, if anyone looks over the top of their spectacles at me, I tend to switch off and disregard.

I agree that it can feel very irritating. But someone said that to me back in the '70s. I replied, ‘I’m wearing half-eye glasses, in case you haven’t noticed: it’s difficult to imagine how else I can look at you!’ This was before bifocals were quite so fashionable .

And bifocals are a whole other learning curve, I tried them once, just did my head in.

Yes some people do the “looking over” for a specific effect, but you can normally spot that from other cues. Others… We just don’t want to wear complicated expensive glasses. I tend to push my glasses up my forehead (like most people do when wearing sunglasses) as looking over the top can be just as irritating to the look-er as the look-ee

I wear varifocals.
For those who don’t need specs, they are like bifocals but the sharp line between the two sections is changed into a section for close up at the bottom, distance on top and a gradation between the two.
Yep take some getting used to, but now I get on well with them.

I was told that horses have varifocal eyes too, they can look closely at the grass and see the distance at the same time. They raise their head if you approach them to keep you in focus.
I’m sure others can correct that if wrong.
Bit strange in a truck with the tacho above the windscreen as I need to lift my head right up to use the bottom part of the lens, not just move my eyes. Moving attention between dash and road is easy though.

Not sure if it would qualify as “varifocals” but horses have panoramic vision apparently, pretty useful for a herbivorous “prey” animal

You should all take a leaf out of Starmers book and get top of the range designer ones paid for you.:face_with_hand_over_mouth:

(Punches air in a very childish way shouting …YESSsss. :joy:)

The rosy coloured ones by any chance?
(With side blinkers. :joy: )

(Punches ai…oh never mind.:joy:)

I’ve been using multifocals for over 20 years. You have to get through the first morning to allow your brain to adjust. I knew an old glass scientist who didn’t last the morning with his. I picked up mine from the optician after breakfast, swapped them for my old bifocals. Felt a bit weird. Got into my lorry gear and loaded the car for the off. Still had half an hour in hand so I practised the piano (yes, I’m a pianist ) and to my alarm, the keyboard seemed to bow in a big arc across my lap. I persevered. Driving the 25 miles or so to the yard, I had similar odd optometric happenings until my brain began to get the hang of the new lenses. I loaded my gear into the LHD lorry and headed for Dover to ship out and down to North Africa. By the time I’d got to Calais I’d forgotten I was wearing new glasses (that wasn’t the drink : I had to wait for Vivonne or Couhe for that!) and I’ve never looked back since - they’re brilliant.

I had probs with varifocals when I first got them.
Sat in the cab I felt a sensation of being lower down, and when I walked the ground seemed closer, rather than stepping I was ‘planting’ my feet…
Must have looked a little like John Cleese…(ok maybe that’s exaggerating a bit.)

Unlike a lot of other drivers who are just a word that sounds very much like “pianist”

Middleton says he is not a politician and I see no reason to argue with him.
I don’t doubt his skills in personal protection, survival etc, but fail to see where those skills are transferable into international diplomacy, economics etc.

I also agree that he is a good speaker, but again that is no evidence of expertise in a subject.

Does RefUK Ltd reflect what many in the UK are thinking and feeling?
Yeah, I expect so. About 4 million votes at the the last GE, compared to 9 million for Labour.

Yeah, that is what I thought. Don’t know what RR was on about. Reform did get more votes than the Lib Dems but fewer seats. That is the nature of the beast in this country, always has been. It is up to the individual candidate. Parachuting in candidates sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t. Maybe next time for Reform.

I watched a Netflix documentary on RM Commando training and the guys going through the training looked pretty normal to me. Like anyone with the correct attitude and a fully functional body could get through it (males that is). Not sure some of them would be able to get through 80 minutes on a rugby field week in week out. Specialist training or SAS/SBS would be slightly different.

There’s no denying these special forces guys are highly trained at great expense for special work, but military prowess doesn’t translate to political prowess. Paddy Pants-down was the closest to achieving that we’ve seen (RM and SBS officer), and not forgetting Airey Neave.

Taking your lead from Ant Middleton (who I hadn’t heard of until I saw him in this thread) is probably a step lower than taking your lead from Andy McNab or Chris Ryan, at least they publish (undoubtedly ghost written) books, and don’t appear on reality TV :face_vomiting:

If Reform think “hard man” speakers are what defines them, then that suggests their idea of PMs Question Time needs to be held outside in the car park.

Anyhoo all this talk of spectacles is diverting from another spectacle. After seeing this it’s probably a good idea that Starmer gets dressed by a sponsor.

If what you say is true, concerning vote stats, I stand corrected.
I am apparentlly WRONG…
Not sure where I got that confusion from, maybe filling my far too pretty head too full of politics these days, instead of the usual football and beer…(not so much women these days)

Never been afraid or embarrased to admit when wrong when it applies…AND ya know what?
It doesn’t hurt ! .:flushed:

Does not matter a flying one whether he is a ‘hard man’ or soft as the proverbial, it is irrelevant.

Point is he did talk a lot of good old fashioned logic and common sense in that clip.
Or anything you care to refute?
Or write off as crap?
I have you down as having more intelligence and astuteness than to casually bandy the label ‘racist’ around in this situation, or indeed any situation if I aint mistaken…unlike some.

Way I see it rightly or wrongly, is his only agenda is patriotism, rather than politics, Also he captures, (and is aware of) the mood of the vast majority of right thinking realist people in this country, (irrespective of the party that was hosting him, or in fact any party) .
No I aint a ‘fanboy’ before you ask, I just agree with a lot of what he says.

More than you can say for our PM who casually writes off anybody who does not agree with him (including the working class who ironically are his traditional target electotate) as ‘Far right’, in fact one of the clowns at the conference today referred to those who criticised their freebees as… ‘Far right’…:joy: .(presumably because on that occasion the word ‘racist’ did not fit..)

Unreal.
