Policeman killed on M1 J39/40

The Sarge:
I’m assuming the number was in reply to calebs gramps’ post about nobody moving over for the fitter - he wasn’t suggesting that the officer should have called in the Wombles, was he?

You’re perfectly correct sarge, my comment was aimed at getting assistance for an offside tyre change. The police on my patch don’t do lane closures for tyre changes. I wasn’t for one second suggesting that the police call us. In my area, we co-operate and work together, I know that’s an alien concept for some who post on here.

A lorry driver has been charged with causing the death of a policeman who was killed on a motorway after stopping to help a woman.

PC Mark Goodlad was hit after going to the aid of the woman who had broken down on the hard shoulder of the M1 near Wakefield in October last year.

The officer, 41, from Goole, East Yorkshire, left a wife and teenage son.

The lorry driver, a 45-year-old man from Oldham, is charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been bailed to appear at Wakefield Magistrates’ Court on 13 June.

PC Goodlad died when an orange Scania articulated heavy goods vehicle hit his marked BMW X5 police car and a grey Suzuki Swift on the southbound carriageway.

The police car and the Suzuki were both stationary on the hard shoulder.

Pc Goodlad was between the two vehicles, helping the 51-year-old female Suzuki driver. She suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Jane Cryer, District Crown Prosecutor with the Crown Prsecution Service in West Yorkshire, said: “Following an investigation by West Yorkshire Police, our lawyers have decided that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to prosecute this offence.”

I would like to send my deepest condolences to the officers family. To hell with all the ill feeling towards the police, and all that crap- shame on any that spout it!!!. He was just an honest, family man doing his job. He went to work, and alas wont of returned. It could be anyone of us tomorrow, next week, month or year. Hope it doesn’t but lifes too short to think otherwise.

Tragic, another avoidable accident probably, I really don’t get these guys who refuse to move over when they see a stationary vehicle in the hard shoulder, asking for trouble.

RIP

RIP Mr Plod

R.I.P sad news

I make it a rule now to change to lane two if i see any breakdown vehicles on the hard shoulder. dangerous driving aside it can be to easy to be blown a foot the wrong way. terrible news and a tragic loss to the community at whole.

I passed that about 2 mins after it happened. The scania looked quite bad and the police x5 was pushed up the bank. There was a bloke on the hard shoulder with a total look of shock on his face. So sad to hear he died. RIP officer Goodlad

My thoughts also to the driver nobody goes out to kill anyone on the roads.

Just wondering if the usual suspects will laugh this sad event off, and congratulate the truck driver? :unamused:
Very sad to see anyone killed, regardless of their profession.
R.I.P. Mr Goodlad.

Very noble if theres the room, but in this case just being in the correct lane would have sufficed. We’ve all seen the [zb]'s, one wheel over the rumble strip as they fiddle around with something that has nothing to do with driving the truck, he deserves to go down for driving like that :frowning:
