We don’t know the circumstances. So let’s not condemn him yet!

I make it a rule now to change to lane two if i see any breakdown vehicles on the hard shoulder. dangerous driving aside it can be to easy to be blown a foot the wrong way. terrible news and a tragic loss to the community at whole.

I always do the same. Its alway sad when some one lose there life R I P pc Goodlad

i always try and move over if i can, rip officer

A truly terrible accident. There is surely a case for police/vosa NOT stopping vehicles on the hard shoulder for ROUTINE checks.Whenever it has happened to me I tell them I don’t thinkj it is safe the answer was always "you are perfectly safe my patrol car is parked behind you"Nuff said.

might have been a broken down vehicle though.

When i go to London from Peterborough i must see 5-7 broken down cars just sitting there on the side of the road with the hazards on. Now there sitting there in need of help and are just in much danger as the officers who turn up to help.

I passed a car on the hard shoulder in the early hours of Sat morning with the door wide open, it was actually slightly in lane one, on approach I was thinking “WTF” then I noticed the driver hung onto the door being sick :open_mouth:

I think I would have thrown up in the car rather than hang my head in lane one :open_mouth:

"PC Mark Goodlad was assisting a vulnerable motorist, who had broken down in that dangerous space. He was doing his job as his colleagues do day-in day-out.

The 44-year-old driver of the HGV was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, police added.

This is the bit that you missed.–quote “PC Mark Goodlad, 41, was hit on Monday afternoon after helping a woman whose car had broken down on the hard shoulder of the southbound carriageway”.

I offer my Condolences to the family of this Police Officer. Who was killed while assisting a member of the public. R.I.P. PC Goodlad,

Insofar as the TNUK members of the ACAB Club , who bigvern1 referred to are concerned, the anti-police crap that they post says far more about them, than it does about the targets of their bile, They do well to STFU.

Hear hear. Though some live in each others pockets. Careful what you say and to whom!

Buycrider, some of the posters only aim on this thread and others is to cause or create mayhem, simply reading a couple of the pages of past posts will show you who they are.

Sometimes guilty as charged…But when people are blatantly aiming at the police because of bad history. And being applauded for it in certain cases. Then I make my point. This poor man was doing what he’s supposed to do. And some on here may cheer. That in my book is well out of order.

It’s sad Mark Goodlad died just doing his job and I feel for his family and friends at this time.

However the death of one officer does not, and never will, change my overall opinion of the police. I still despise them with a passion but I am certainly not jumping around and punching the air in delight at this event.

Three times last night on the M6 I moved over for vehicles on the hard shoulder, two police cars and one HATO. Motorway had very little traffic on it as it was the early hours of the morning so it was easy just to slip into lane 2 for a hundred metres or so but I only saw one other truck do the same as me. All the others either ahead or behind just rolled along lane 1. On the three occurrences there was probably a total of 10 or 11 trucks I could see, lane 2 clear each time, and only 2 moved over to give some room.

nor mine!

all i would say having worked on that bit of the M1 for a few years on recovery is that i’m surprised that their havent been more fatals, north bound and south bound between junctions 38&41 its just so intence big-ish hills and very fast moving traffic as well as the openess to side winds. rip pc goodlad .

Exactly, broken down is an emergency, routine checks are very seldom emergencies.but,as this incident shows, any stopping on the hard shoulder has risks, why put yourself in danger when it’s not necessary??Follow me to a slip road off motorway or to services at least to somewhere safe.Personal experience has had police patrols telling me I am perfectly safe, because my patrol car is behind you with blue lights flashing!!!Again, nuff said!!!

Thank you for quoting that as the link i looked at stated how he died and where it was, not what he was doing and why he was there.

r.i.p

sad waste of a life. i like most, whenever possible, would move into lane two so as to give extra room for anything that was on the hard shoulder, both for their benefit, aswell as my own.

should do it in a car as well and this should be a golden rule to give room to anyone working on the hard shoulder.
