good god, why? It’s hideous! Hope it was SERIOUSLY sub £500

It sure is ain’t it its so uncool that’s why I love it. It was just over 500 quid but the cheapest you get a car here is $1000 which is about £750.
5.0v8 electric everything and it all works most comfortable car ever. Been sitting in a field for a year with a duff alternator stuck one on and it fired up and not missed a beat.

Kev…The OP meant under £500 pounds…Not feet long!

■■■■ knows how much it’s worth scrap it weighs about 4 ton.

Nothing wrong with that it’ll last forever and a day and with the 5 litre pushrod motor in it a few spanners and a screwdriver is all it will need to fix it when it goes wrong. But the old Crown Vic looks better.

Fit about 10 people in it and 3 dead bodies in the boot to.

Heres the thing I have been relegated to as me missus sold her car and nicked my BM, £200 to buy but another few quid for the mot.

Love a good car thread!

I have plenty that I’ve sold for under £500 lol

This one the clutch went:

This one the fuel pump went:

This one the crankshaft pulley was shearing off:

I think the only one not on the road today is the Vectra, that got crushed :frowning:

This one I just plain miss and should never of sold and I like to post pictures of it :sunglasses: :

Is that the GSI body kit on that?

My old dear brought on back in 2002. It went like a rocket and was such a lovely car but the car was a fan of petrol

New MOT
£350

Best bargain I ever had was a Vauxhall Senator. New mot, recently serviced, £100 in 2004. 150mph, boy racer thrasher for a ton. Bargain.
My last car was a 97 Vitara, Cost £400. Had it for 5 years. Total bills (not including consumables) £400. Not bad when you consider that it went off road frequently, and never broke down.

My farther had a Vauxhall Senator. It was an ex met traffic one to and went like a rocket. I can remember when i was 16 when he gave a boy racer a run for his money. The boy racer was in a RS turbo and got eaten alive

Mine was also ex police. It wasn’t a traffic car though, it was CID.
The previous owner and friend of mine was a police man and bought it when the police finished with it.
Mine was fully serviced every 10,000 miles, oil change once a week, and was tweaked by the force to up power from 225bhp to 275bhp.
It was the only motor I have had that was quick enough to let me overtake the Tesco wagons on the A420 between Swindon and Oxford.

Good old 3.0 senators :sunglasses: Were they a straight 6 engine? I raced one about 8 years ago in a D reg Sierra XR4x4 2.8 V6 going past Monmouth on the A444 (or whatever its called, the big duel carriage way) when I was going down to Cardiff to see me dad. The Sierra XR4x4’s had a close ratio gearbox fitted to 'em so it would only do 125mph tops, only had 150bhp too, but was great fun. I’d blast past him, then he’d blast past me. Very cool stuff :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

I also bought a Vauxhall Carlton 2.0 auto for £80, was p*ss poor slow but very comfortable and relaxing to drive. That didnt last long, head gasket was on its way out when I bought it. I eventually siezed the engine when pratting about in it.

Its the GSi front bumper for sure, is it the MK2 bumper (there were 2 different styles) Think the side skirts are just standard SRi items along with the rear spoiler and possibly the rear bumper . Wheels are off the later Vectra ‘C’ SRi.

Did you know that you can buy the indicator stalk with the cruise control buttons, fit it and have fully working cruise control? Costs about £20 for a stalk off ebay. All the DTi models regardless of spec have the clutch switch and brake switch already fitted.

Remove the steering column plastics (have to turn the steering wheel to access the screws/grubs)
Unplug the stalk and re-attach the new stalk remembering to plug the cruise in (sure its either a blue or grey plug, you may have to root for it)
re-attach plastics and voila, working cruise control :sunglasses:

Yeah. Straight 6, 24v. 3 litre.
Best moment I had was on the way home from work, pulling away from the traffic lights in Blunsdon, near Swindon, and being neck and neck with a Porsche 911 right upto 120mph where I backed off because I knew that the cops liked hiding further up the road. Sure enough, on my exit slip road of the A419 (Latton/Fairford) there was a battenburg with the porsche on the side of the road. I waved nicely.

It used to amuse me in and around Swindon when the boys in there expensive gary boy cars, used to sit there beside me with 2 grands worth of stereo pumping out, showing off with all the mates they could fit in the tin box, and I used to leave them standing in my £100 car, with the (now ex) wife and kids in the car.
Eventually, I had to sell it as another child was on the way, and I wanted bigger. Sold it for £700 with no mot.

first thing, sorry for derailing this topic, i’ll have to dig up some of my £500 car’s out

why what’s a load of bull then?

don’t know if it changed, but red derv isn’t as refined as white (don’t know if that’s changed due to tractor’s having common rail lump’s fitted)

i have seen what red diesel does to a 1.9pdtdi a4. the engine oil had turned red. tank pump, high pressure pump (mounted on the engine), the injectors, were all knackered. it had scored the cam’s aswell, due to the diesel had thinned the oil down… we didn’t bother going any further with the strip down.

philip
automotive mechanic, and class 4 and 7 mot tester. so i ain’t any joe blogg’s who does a bit of spannering on the street on a sunday.

You aint no chemist either. Rebated fuel in the UK uses Solvent Red 24 and quinizarin (CAS NO. 81-64-1) for the markers, it is simply a dye that is added to normal diesel. It is a fine orange or red chrystaline powder.

Granted the diesel they use is not low sulphur stuff as sold on the pumps, but there are many fuel stations who do sell two grades of diesel oil fuel. But to be honest it sounds like your engine has been running on kerosene at some time, the fuel dye will mark the internals, but the dry lubricant in kero will do that sort of damage you mention. It also has a different detonation temperature.

as far as i am aware most red diesel sold in the uk is now also low sulphur, during the past 2 years most farmers/plant hire firms i know in this area have been informed of the change by the bulk fuel suppliers.
Red diesel wont harm an engine, infact if you could still get the non low sulphur stuff it would be better for your engine than the low lubricating crap we use today!

To clarify the Cat C and Cat D points made earlier regarding the V-car:

The Association of British Insurers classifies Categories of ‘Write-Off’ as:

Category A: Scrap only - this vehicle should have been crushed. It should never reappear on the road and there are no economically salvageable parts. It is of value only for scrap metal - e.g. a totally burnt-out vehicle.

Category B: The bodyshell should have been crushed. The vehicle should never reappear on the road, but it can be broken for spare parts plus any residual scrap metal.

Category C: Vehicle extensively damaged and insurer has decided not to repair. The vehicle should have an independent inspection before being allowed back onto the road.

Category D: Vehicle damaged and insurer has decided not to repair.

I have been repairing and running Cat C and Cat D cars for the past 20 years. The problem isn’t necessarily with the accident damage as the quality of the repair.
