Peterborough hauliers

BAXTER BOY:
Anyone remember the Transcons Hotpoint ran out of Pboro.?

I can remember them having Transcons, although most of the fleet were D-Series Fords. I also remember that they had a few DAF units as well. Do you remember the alternative brown/cream paint scheme?
When I worked for Reads of Peterborough, we often did household deliveries for Hotpoint from their factory in Celta Road, Woodston, Peterborough - usually to the
London area. If I remember correctly, Walkers Transport (I think they were from Wakefield), did the Northern deliveries.
Driving for Hotpoint was considered one of the best jobs in the area at the time.
Anyone got any photos?

As I drove for peterborough heavy haulage for about 15 years and have only just found this web page I noticed two of the heavy trucks are the one’s I had from new. I have got a lot of photos if any one is interested and can work out how to down load them on to here [new to computering]

does anyone know where abouts the scotflow depot was in peterborough ?

Scotflow depot was almost opposite heavy haulage’s gate behind what became a car sales garage

Firstly, welcome to TruckNet. We’re always pleased to have new contributors, so get them photos of PHH, and any others, posted.

In recalling old Peterborough hauliers no one mentioned C.A.Slater from Crowland of whom I have got a book written by one of the Slater boy’s but it has got a bit water damaged so I will try to salvage some pictures at a later date neither was Cyril A.White of Eye who I drove for. Whites had about 18 lorries at there peak mostly hauling bricks from Eye and Dogsthorpe brickyards then owned by London Brick Company. Most of Whites lorries where Foden artics and Dodge rigid’s and tippers all with treble numbers on registration plates. The last artic unit they bought was a volvo 86 Reg.NEG 444M which was how I got employed by P.H.H. as whites had a single axle lowloader working for them. This is the only photo I have got of it taken coming out of Tallington (Dowmacs) with P.H.H. 60 foot trailer carring a tower crane.

Hi greyknight.
I’d forgotten about Slaters, but now you mention them i’d love to see the pictures.
I remember Cyril Whites, in particular the Dodge rigids, and I think I may have mentioned them earlier on this thread. Can you remember an outfit that was based
in the Fengate area that ran a mix of 2nd hand trucks, all hand-painted in dark blue?
You could see their yard, on the right-hand side, if you drove from Oxney Road towards town. They always looked a bit rough, and didn’t seem to last long. Would have
been early to mid 80’s IIRC.

Sellers & Batty were an ERF dealership, and were further towards town, although also on the same side of the road. In fact, S&B were about halfway between the
un-named haulage company and the BRS depot. As a further thought, the outfit i’m trying to recall ran mostly Seddon Atkinson 400 series units.

Sellers & Batty also ran lorries in the pre Lex days.
I can’t wait till someone remembers who ran those dark blue Seddon Atkinsons - it’s doing my head in!.
Meanwhile…sort of on subject is a photo of a PC Howard ERF outside S&B in 1986.

Just found this on BigLorryBlog. Anybody else remember them?
I seem to remember them being black and cream, with “KEEP SMILING” signwritten across the front.

That was a different Baxter from Eye I think. Didn’t he run all black ERF and Dodges with “Keep Smiling” across the front - because he was such a miserable bugger?.

greyknight:
all with treble numbers on registration plates.

Sort of loosely connected; after being at Murfitts a few months, someone mentioned that they would not have any registrations in which the numbers added up to 13 - something to do with Romany roots according to Guy Billyeald

Shortly after, I casually asked Janet Murfitt one day whether K670JAH didn’t count, which brought a bit of a frosty non reply :grimacing: I would just add that she was a great woman though, and made the best carrot cake I’ve ever tasted!

Found this while browsing elsewhere.
KTL were originally J&E Kenny, but changed their livery and name when they were acquired by Watts.
