Thats spot on,although the turning into may be not quite right , C.Minnaar were alreadt established at Boston earlier but then moved operations to Earith where there was a ready made depot and cold storage facilities. I worked for a bloke called Stan Marshall who took over the running of EFP and had the pick of Minnaar’s work i could be wrong but i dont think there was ever a ‘take over’ as such more like an amalgamation.Stan ran at the time 3Guy Big j with Gardner Engines, 1 Dodge with a V8 Perkins, 1 BMC Mastiff with a perkins V8, 3 4 wheeler Guys with the Leyland 401,1 Dodge 4 wheeler with a Perkins 354,Later they got modern and bought Mercedes 1418s to replace the Guy’s , then replaced these with 3 more 1418 's a year later, Prior to this they ran some BMC 4 and 6 wheel flats and also a sentinel 6 wheeler and a BMC artic.
never did keep any pictures (dammit)
There is as always much more to it that i dont know the details sufficiently well enough to comment, perhaps some one else does ?
Sorry if this is self-indulgent, but here’s my old Steyr.

IIRC, Dow Concrete were at Tallington. Did they make long beams? Can’t say I remember Riverside Garage, even though my operating centre was at Market Deeping.
Hi gb1,
Yes Dow carried abnormal size loads of concrete beams etc out of Tallington,Riverside Garage was situated on the left hand side of the Stamford Road, some 50yds after the roundabout, but before you got to the property on the left that used to be a mill, was owned by the Geest[banana’s]family,my mates father used to chaffeur/handyman and lived in accomodation there,we used to take Geest’s Green Racing Bentley and Silver Gullswing Merc for rides around Deeping, those were the days!
Take it easy

Once did a delivery of furniture to the Geest house, back in the days when I worked for Reads of Peterborough. Beautiful place.
I used to operate out of Hereward Freight’s yard before I moved up to Yorkshire.
Just found this in a book.An F7 and Renault at Peterborough Freight Terminal sidings loading molasses from railcars in 1982.I presume it’s on the old New England loco yard north of Peterborough North station.I’m not sure of the name of the tanker company, looks like Orlan Tankers Ltd.Were they Peterborough based?
Think you’ve got the right location Chris. That looks like the Baker-Perkins offices in the distance. I can remember Orlan, but don’t know where they were based.

A few old un’s here from my days with Reads of Peterborough.
Apologies for the small size of the photo’s.
Reads were heavily into removals.
Ford Transcontinental, driven by Graham Wakefield, loaded for the Middle-East.
One of a batch of 6, bought in 1979.
TAV 902S, LHD Ford Transcontinental. It was fitted with a ‘kitchen-pack’, that included fridge, gas-cooker, wash-basin.
LEG 860P, which was driven by Barry Hill, seen on show at the East of England Show, prior to delivery.
Ford A-Series did a lot of Euro-work.
Scania was bought from an O/D, and did several trips to the Middle-East.
Mark R:
These Mercedes 1628s were used mainly on the general haulage side if i remember, as with a mere 280 horses on tap they would be struggling on the really heavy stuff!!
Mark it us the diff, gear box axle ratio which is more importent on Heavy haulage as the Scammell “junior” Contractor had a 250 ■■■■■■■ and was rated at 125 tons GTW and would do about 52mph solo. The ballasted tractor would be approx.26 tons, trailer 30 tons and a 70 ton load would be pulled by a junior on it’s own.So a SK Merc 280 with hub reduction axles would not have to much problem on heavy work.
Couple of Scammells from the Walker fleet.
DAF operated by Taylors of Ailsworth.
Mid-Anglia Transport ran a selection of ERF’s and Fodens.
Papworths ran a very smart fleet of Volvo’s.

Okay Murfitts were a littleport firm but all the fridges and some roadtrains were based at whittlesey . Heres a pic of mine.
Slightly further afield, how about CS Ellis from South Luffenham? Can’t recall who mentioned Musgroves from Stamford but they are no longer anyway. Didn’t Cyril Bridge get swallowed by Turners? They even had the same colour stripes around the cab.
