haven’t seen one of treasures tankers for ages, aren’t they just green though
Dark green, possibly British Racing Green, and silver. Think most of the fleet are CF DAF’s. Been by their yard at the side of the A1, and they look to have a fair-sized fleet, all of which look well turned-out. Thought of another firm from Peterborough, who also ran green and cream trucks. Think they were called Murdens, and they were based at Peakirk, just on the outskirts. Dont know if they’re still going - so many have dissappeared.

Back in the mid 70’s to the early 80’s I worked for Reads of Peterborough. They had a sizeable fleet at the time, from ■■■■■■ vans up to Transcontinentals, and did work rangeing from parcels to removals to international/ME haulage. Although the name is still alive, it’s no longer under family ownership. Just wondered if anybody else remembers them, or any of the other hauliers from the area. Walkers, J&E Kenny, Taylors of Ailsworth, T for Transport, Peterborough Heavy Haulage, Box-o-Freight are the ones that come immediately to mind, although there were many others of course.
Kenny’s had an office in Farnworth, near Hipwood & Grundy, and run by a chap called Benny (surname escapes me now) - I used to sub a fair bir of backload work to “Benny Kenny”. They were associated with (or owned by?) Peterborough Engineering, who I think were ERF dealers in the 60s, weren’t they? They also had some warehousing at Eye.
I believe that Peterborough Heavy Haulage was acquired by Carter’s/CEL Group - their website used to have a pic of a PHH motor on it. PHH used to have a rather beefy Atkinson Viewline once upon a time, too.
UEG 897H, I think… ok, I’ll get my anorak
Taylors ran mostly DAF’s, which were painted yellow. They did a lot of European work.
thats where my old chap worked for a number of years and they did euro, turkey a few times and further…
theres also J.A. HUTCHINSON & SONS (HAULAGE)
this link will show there yard this used to be Taylers yard

I remember PC Howards very well, they used to load steel out of Sheerness, this photo was taken at Truckfest Peterborough many moons ago!! I think i have some of Peterborough Heavy Haulage as well somewhere, i,ll dig them out if anyones interested.
There was a photo of a PHH truck in their yard (was their livery grey cab?), I think it was a foden(?) (or is it a 3 series Scania? Not clear from the pic? but look at the CEL logo on the top of the cab) with a low loader, on the CEL Group website.
I know that Carters bought them some time in the mid 90’s, and liveried them in the W Carters green with yellow signwriting, you used to see a few of them but I guess they’re retired now. I think the logic was that their expertise and machinery gave Carters the ability to offer a heavy container moving division, and you do still see the occasional WC truck pulling a low loader with a 40’ container on it.
I think they may have had a different name on the front (starting with ‘Nene’ instead of ‘Deben’ like all Carters other motors). Here it is, not the best quality in the world, but…
who’s forgot murrfits then
Chorcheela:

Definitely a Foden, I bought 2 of those for Toray, a tractor then when we got rid of the artics, a drawbar 6 wheeler. Great motors and the only reason I searched for alternatives was the lack of air suspension on the front axle wanted for demounting operations. The Foden had hydraulic rams which lifted the boxes in order to drop the legs.
no ones forgot murfitts, they were a littleport firm with a yard in peterborough
and an apology to you chris webb, orton longueville I have since been told stretches down almost to the old sugar factory so goodmans were in fact in orton longueville

No need to apologize Biggus,I wasn’t sure myself. I’d just got this picture of Goodmans with Orton Logueville on back of their tankers.
These Mercedes 1628s were used mainly on the general haulage side if i remember, as with a mere 280 horses on tap they would be struggling on the really heavy stuff!!
Thanks for all your responses. Surely someone out there has got more photos. Another firm that ive dragged from the depths of my memory was Cyril White, who ran a fleet of maroon and yellow Dodges, and were based at Eye on the outskirts of P’boro. Does anyone remember Perkins Engines fleet of Seddons?
Yes, I do - they were blue from memory and were replaced by T45 Leyland Roadtrains - with Perkins engines fitted, of course.
I actually have Goodman’s last remaining ERF tanker which is a 1971 LV eight wheeler. It was converted to a tipper in the early 1980’s, but the original insulated tank off it sat in a field at the side of the road near the Q8 garage on the A605 at Warmington until only last year. Goodmans used to haul liquid (hot) bitumen or tar, and the business finished in the late 1970’s after an alleged staff dispute, so I am told.
Does anybody remember R.D.Williams from Orton Waterville?. Their yard was near the old windmill.

Ok, lets try and wake this thread up a bit!
Enough about Southampton, lets have a bit of interest in Peterborough and the surrounding area!!
The various Williams operations combined at Easton ( former home of Edwards Bros Transport) on the A14 a while back.
They are now all under the cream & green livery and do alot of recycled paper.
Spreading the thread a bit further south, does anybody remember C.W Bridge of Huntingdon who ran quite a big fleet until they sold out to City Trucks.
C.W (Cyril) Bridge was quite a character and was the Mayor of Huntingdon for a while. They ran Bedfords, alot of Seddon Atkis and latterly Leylands, wouldn’t have a “foreign” motor in the place.
What do you know?
Just read the pages and this thread was going before l joined…this mob have been mentioned so heres a cutting from my scrapbook.
Hope this is of interest.
Cheers Marc.
nobody has mentioned R, BAXTERS from eye , happy memories from the sixties playing on there traction engines,i have seen one picture from bubbleman a foden , always had KEEP SMILING across the front

I remember them as Baxter & Guoin (not sure on the spelling). From what I recall, they ran Mickey Mouse Fodens, painted black with gold signwriting. Believe most of their work was carrying potatos, although I would imagine they also did bricks from the local brickyards.
Can anyone remember Earith Fruit Packers , ran mostly bmcs , and a sentinel with a horizontal engine, later went on to 1418 mercs, were based in Earith and had quite a fleet at one time

bill, didn’t they turn into C.Minaar, now swallowed up by someone else? I once tipped a load of “Madagascan Lychees” in there from Rungis - only fridge load I ever did i think
