S.E Johnson Darley Dale, would this be the mill back of DFS by railway line?

Yes that’s the one Pete, S&E Johnson West, the domain of Ernest Johnson. The East mill in Lumsdale was Sidneys site. The Johnsons flour mill is the DFS building that is now a warehouse that stands to the south of the DFS showroom across the railway line. Bedford and ERF users in the fifties/sixties then moving over to AEC, Volvo, Ford and Leyland with still the odd Bedford around till the end. An interesting Company to hear other views on. Mike.

Morning Mike,
Thank You for reply, I worked for a feed mill in Wolverhampton and used to collect flaked maize from Johnsons and had been to the east mill as well, fork lifts at the west mill and handball at the East Mill if I remember correctly,1987 was the last time I went there as Johnsons used to deliver it themselves using a subby called Chirpy,he had a Bedford TL curtainside 17 tonner and I think it was a Sed Atki 6 wheel bulker also, Cheer’s Pete

Still going Pete, his yard is just down the road from me. I seem to remember that the red painted Johnsons lorries were based at the Two Dales East mill and the yellow ones were on Old Road but why that was I haven’t a clue. Maybe Mike can elaborate on this?

Pete.

Hi Pete,
With out meaning to sound rude Chirpy was a bit on the large side and he used to fill that Bedford cab up! Cracking lad always had a smile when we met, his Bedford had red cab and yellow curtains, actually Johnsons was the first place I drove to with my L plates on, think it was on a Albion Clydesdale DUK 838J!

Blimey, great pic Tone. I remember seeing those furniture vans as a kid.

Moving slightly here’s a pic of Brian (cuddly) Freeman at Dene quarry in 1965. Pic courtesy of his lad Brian.

Who is this at Hulland products ?

One for Robert ,seen by the Holly Bush pub with prospect quarry behind .

I wonder if Wirksworth Rod is the driver of one of those Webster’s Scammells? John Upton had a garage on New Street in Matlock, it seemed strange seeing an eight legger AEC or a tractor unit stretched across the pavement while he was changing wheels etc and folk walking around it doing their shopping! Wouldn’t be allowed now I doubt. I remember Boney Hay concrete having that Big J, I reckon that they will be long gone by now. Don’t recognize that Seddon, I bet Malmic will know though. Stuart Allen ran sand etc into there daily from Mercaston but he had Fodens when I was occasionally running seven loads a day up to Products!

Pete.

I am off to New Zealand ,anyone coming ?
