Can anyone fix an ID on this location? Been told it’s a quarry in the Derbyshire area but it’s got me stumped.

Any ideas on the tanker chaps, looks like an LPG tank, maybe a shell motor, so I presume fuel for firing burners perhaps ?

Hi sniffy.I think what you’ve said is spot on pretty sure they were Shell Scammells and just out of view at the bottom of pic.would be the NO ENTRY board while tanker is delivering.Im sure its the Middle Peak Lime Plant and IIRC it was a bit tight and steep down in the bottom for a rigid so he’d have some fun with that when empty.Still plenty of machines to help him out. Mike.

Think you may be right Mike. Have a look at this pic taken in December 1934 and the old plant in this shot seems to be in the later (60s?) shot to the right.

Middlepeak Quarries

Title: Bowne and Shaw’s Quarry

Further Information:

The quarry floor and lime kilns at Bowne and Shaw’s Quarry, part of the Middlepeak complex of workings. At the base of the kilns a covered loading dock allowing railway wagons to be loaded in the dry can be seen. Rail access to the quarry was via a steeply-graded private line down to the ex-Midland Railway Duffield -Wirksworth branch. Bowne and Shaw had been acquired by the Stanton Ironworks Company (a major customer since the 1860’s - limestone was used as a flux in the ironmaking process) in 1918 and several Stanton steel-bodied hopper wagons can be discerned in this view, together with one in Brown and Shaw livery.

Hi BD.
Found another couple of shots of M.Peak ( Stoneycroft Quarry ) I thought this part of the quarry had its own name.Top left you can see where the tankers stood to discharge into the Large tank as in your first pic.The quarry floor has now been filled in quiet a bit and its a recreation area with footpaths and renamed Stoney Wood.Found these in a book called the Wirksworth Branch by Howard Sprenger who’s pic.this is.When you look at the pic I took on Thursday you would’nt realise all the activity that has gone on there over the years. Regards Mike.

I reckon it’s Hazel Grove as well, looking towards Stockport. There was a lorry park further back in the Buxton direction, near the lights where the A6 and Macc. road split. Our fiddling Chesterfield drivers were regulars on there.

Here is that Lorry Park taken in October 2008 Chris, I don’t know if they have done anything with the land since then.
It’s as if lorries don’t exist now a days.

Thanks for that Paul,I haven’t been past that park with a wagon since 1978. I used the A6 odd times to go back to Staveley Chemicals and load but our Chesterfield drivers parked in there regular and fiddled home. One I remember got a lift in one of Mullan Brothers empty tippers and was a shivering wreck when he got out t’other end.

Hi Chris. The last coal merchants I can remember at Bakewell were F Lomas and Henry Bramwell and Bakewell & District Coop had an office for a while and I’m sure there were others over the years. But I must confess I have had to look it up before the memory clicked in.

Hi Sniffy.Yes its different today as you know with a small industrial estate keeping the area busy. But its good to see the old station surviving.Regards Mike.

Yes I was across there last year. There is a bike hiring place at the old Hassop station,I haven’t cycled on it but I can imagine the views around Monsal Dale, you could never tire of looking at that area. :sunglasses:

We had steam on the roads as well.

Nice old pics Jim.I wonder when Hughes Brothers stopped using steamers?I remember them their old Fodens on Froggatt Edge when I was lad late 40s and early 50s,but I don’t think any were steamers, perhaps I’m not old enough.
Mam Tor was hard work with an AEC MK3,it must have been even harder with a steamer wagon and drag of Vernons.

These about the right age Chris
