Does any one remember Midlands Storage from Cromford , they did alot of lime to the various steelworks , those in S Wales as well , had mostly ERFs . thank you Trevor .

Is midland storage the same as those Clarke tankers from Muggington ? Come on mike/ thelongdrag shed some light on it.

I remember Clarks running out of Ballidon Dan, they had a Foden or two. My old gaffer Eric drove a Foden two stroke tanker for Midland Storage running out of the Dene, he reckoned everyone in Cromford (including his boss) knew when he started off in the morning! I THINK that he had an artic after that.

Pete.

hiya Midland storage and A M Walker merged in about 1970 if i’am correct… Orange and brown lorries
everywhere…they had a pile of flat trailers in Hulland ward for a while with Atki Borderer units.
i think it was the Walkers who had the fleet of Atki,s. i think they was green cabs with red chassis
before going to Orange

Bernard Swain (Transport) Ltd as you say operated from Cromford Wharf, contracted to Dene Quarries (Derbyshire) Ltd, He then started Midland Storage Transport Services Ltd, taking over a number of companies, including W H Short (contractors) Ltd Newthorpe and Len Cave(Nottingham) Ltd, at one point operating nearly 100 vehicles. He set up Midlands Storage (West Hallam) Ltd. In 1964 it was all taken over by the TDG, Bernard Swain stopping on as managing director of Midland Storage.

Thank’s for that info Fodenfan, before my time but I knew there was a tie in somewhere. Bernard lived on Derby Road at Cromford and I was told that he listened to all his trucks setting off from the wharf, especially the Commer and Foden strokers. Some parked at Dene quarry and went via Cromford hill, Wirksworth and Duffield to Derby so that he couldn’t track them! The Late Gordon Oliver from Matlock Bath drove for him, on a Bedford artic, he could tell a tale or two in the bar of the Midland Hotel. Apparently he used to ‘accidently’ forget that he had a return load to pick up in the Smoke and come home empty to get drinking time in.

Davids got it in hand a body off Turmoils ERF.

When I was a lad :frowning: Bernard Swain operated from Ridgewood Garage,on the A6, don’t know if he owned it or rented it probably the former, someone will know. The first lorries I can remember (early fifties) were some ex army Maudsleys converted into tippers.Don’t think they were around to long. :astonished: Two FG Foden 6 wheelers mid fifties, looking back these looked like ex Hoveringham, but may have been new. Also some new three quarter wheelbase Commer TS3s nice looking lorries these. Ex army 4x4 Austin spreader at least one, may have been more. More lorries arrived in the late fifties, those S20 tippers and tanks. I can’t remember when he moved down into the wharf possibly late fifties and then of course as Fodenfan says Midland Storage. Cromford,West Hallam, and was the other depot Stoney Stanton ? I think ■■■■ Smith and Eddie ---- ran the operation at Cromford and when M-S pulled out he of course became TM at Dene along with Eddie ---- who’s surname I can’t remember. Eddie ---- later went to RMC at Shining Bank.
Dan. I would’nt know of any involvment that Clarkes had other than possibly subbing for them.
I’ve rambled on a bit and breakfast calls, always happy to hear if anythings not right, memory fading pretty fast. Mike.
