Hiya you’ll know some of my mates Steve…was John Chadwick(black jack) there with you, he had a Scammell as Stans,
Stan asked me to Drive his AEC but i give that a miss, Stve Barlow he was on the spanners and other lad named
Canterall went to scool with me but i’ve forgot his first name, he drove the AEC then a Scammell and later a F7.
i knew quite a few of the later lads and girls who drove for Stan. he’d give anyone a chance to drive, none of this
25 thing or 2 years experience, just get in and drive.
John

Yes John Steve was in garage, the bloke ur on about on the 8 wheeler was bugsy his misses had a baby in it,bad weather so owd bugsy piled her in the f7 and set off to hospital but didn’t get there in time :open_mouth: he had his own motor after that always had a f86 with a orange cab and a body like on a dump truck big front over the cab used to park it on the ind est bottom of latheridge. At the time we were running to the m602 I think out of Tarmac hindlow and ringway out of the pike owd Rex wouldn’t let me on the ringway job cuz all the artics were on it,I can here him now when stan told me go in for one, you can go here stan doesn’t give the work out I do  good bloke though then when that was virtually shut I went up to owd redfus at swallows, now that was an education I’d had the eds up off a bloke I used to get on with keith Latham don’t say anything only good morning and thank you :open_mouth: got along great with him in the end it was good times up there then I haven’t been up for years cheers steve

Can anyone tell me why R. Hansons (Wakefield) had tipper bodies that curved down slightly just before the tail board on their 60’s wagons? as I didn’t know of anyone else with this design.
As a kid in the 60’s I also remember seeing another coal firm around called “Mullan’s” or something like that, they had dark blue 8 wheeler’s, but where were they based? My dad was an o/d working out of the Buxton quarries back then, and said it was always best to give Hanson’s and Mullan’s wagons plenty of room if you met them coming along Woodhead or Long Hill because they hardly eased off for bends.
Can anyone also remember seeing 6 wheeler rigid tankers around in the 60’s in the Buxton area, the wagons where called NORDE’s and looked like jacked up Bedford TK’s with double headlights, but they were out long before KM’s were on the scene. They were specialy built in Darley Dale by a firm called North Derbyshire Engineering, and had Bedford cabs but 192 bhp ■■■■■■■ V6’s fitted, I think the tanker firm was called “Philmac” and were in Tarmac’s green livery.

One of R. Hanson’s with the rear curved tipper body.

that marching ton tanker would be driven by ginger elliot , poor bloke stopped dead at the side of the road and when he called for help they found that he had had a stroke and gone totally blind . on a happier note , the tipper in bowyers was ged morrises wagon and he is still alive and kicking .

The Ginger Elliott you mention mate, was it Frank who lastly drove for Derek Barlow? He was my granddad and passed away May 1985. I remember him driving a Mickey Mouse cabbed tipper for Barlows in the mid 70s.

Chris Webb:

Here’s a Hinchcliffe Maudsley from the early 50’s all lettered up and ready to roll at Shining Bank.
Lent to me by a friend who drove for T.W.Wards at Shining Bank Quarry.
Mike.

Mike,I wonder if that’s the same Hinchcliffe from South Elmsall,Pontefract? I used to see their wagons regular in North Derbyshire heading towards Sheffield in the 50s.I notice that 8-legger has a “YG” Yorks West Riding reg so maybe it’s the same company registered with a Bakewell address.

Yes mate they were, they were owned by Ackworth Transport they packed in mid 70,s i think found a few pics for you
