sellers and kent brings back a few memories larry . i worked for turner bros and did a lot of work out of ballidon along with s&k . i loaded back out of london , but they did canterbury and back every day with bagged dust for the animal food factory . they could make those 150s sing , cheers , dave

0This Foden was an Ex. Sellers & Kent motor I bought it off them in the 70s when they were still based at Ilam, I believe it sometimes ran out of Doveholes, It was a great bit of gear 150, Gardner fully tuned up for every hill with its 12 speed box , Regards Larry.

LARRY the sellers and kent yard is still in the same place at ilam, though bob sellers and tony kent split and went there own ways many moons ago, that is how you got sellers of ilam and ak transport !
bob sellers stil goes down to the yard where rob his son works doing repairs and monthly checks for many local truck and coach operators

never took pics of lorries back then , film and developing for a box brownie was too expensive ! that 4 wheeler in the photo was terrible , with 8 tons on it rolled through the bends like a drunken sailor . how are you john , keeping well i hope . eric chapman took the s21 over when i left , crashed it first week , said the brakes were no good , i only had them done in fodens a week before . good little motor that , it would nip on when it had the rack bar wired , cheers , dave

Hello Rigsby,
I liked the S21, drove it for 12 months just before the end of marchies. flat out with a force 9 behind it 42 mph at 1700rpm. wired 48-50 mph at just over 2000 (should be shot at dawn!!). very useful
for beating ronny to tunstead at 5.30 in a morning when he slipped out in front of you outside jaspers in his little erf, 42 flat out.
wonder how many of marchies drivers are left now. I was sad to hear eric morton passed away a few weeks ago. Out of interest , Is eric marchie or donna still with us, haven`t seen eric for 20 years or so.
I must learn how to put pics on here as i have few from the pike 2o yrs ago. I drove that barford sn27
pictured at the pike for a few years. straight eight roller, only ever ran on six and a bit pots. depending on where the engine stopped , it would put water in a cylinder and lock it up when starting. saying that a good stock dumper.must go before i get an urge to get the spanners out.
never happy enless yur ands are black""

Hi Georgie4.

The pic you have of Topley Pike, do they show the lorries they had or the plant? Always good to see fresh pics of the place from years gone by. If you can’t scan them and put them up, you think I could borrow them and scan them? Only need to lend them for a day or so then you can have them back.

Let me know pal.

Thank you Moose, When I bought the S21, Old Mr Kent took me to their new depot in Ashbourne while it was still being developed, He was a cracking old bloke He had a Rover Automatic car at that time, Later on my cousin bougth their S39 TRB 132 K an Ex Tilcon motor I believe, Regards Larry.

Yes Larry, TRB 132K was an ex Tilcon Ballidon powder tanker driven by the Late Ian Slater and the first truck I drove (to the test station at Derby) after passing my test. That was when I found that the 12 speed gearbox also had 12 neutrals! TRA 243K was its ‘sister’ vehicle.

It was a good motor, It had a Thynne alloy body & could carry 20.700. Not a bad payload, My cousin ran it on local & distance work, Lime up to Perth & load back from SAI Ltd at Lieth for Beverley, It was never any bother at all, Regards Larry.

I remember back in about 1975 when I was 15 and on a school trip to the Peak District, staying in youth hostels at Hope, Eyam, Castleton and Chapel-en-le-Frith, I liked the sound of the lorries, I think Foden S20, 21 etc. You could hear them for miles going out of Castleton. I think Sam Longson was one of the firms. I was a confirmed lorry enthusiast by then as I used to ride in my uncles cattle lorry based in Shaftesbury, Dorset.

Reckon it is Dan, be pushed to get two truck’s side by side there nowadays!

Pete.

John,
That little Seddon tanker of Ripley’s has the cab I remember seeing on a Heyworth Bros tipper.
Is it the design that came after the other Heyworth’s Seddon, I’ve always wondered what this model was ?

Hiya tipit was it vita foam who had vans with that front panel on, i think the vans was blue and yellow,
maybe it was someone else before Vita. thinking really hard was it Swan mills Rochdale.
John

Hiya John, yes I’ve only saw that cab before as vans myself, were the ones your thinking of Blue Dart or Knowle’s before them ?

That cab was used a lot, when my dad drove for Laws transport in Reading they had a couple of flatbeds fiited with them and I think that Graham Adams had tractor units with them. I think that Seddon were a bit like Foden, plenty of cab choices!

Pete.

Wasn’t that a Boalloy cab? Or am I dreaming again?
