This is not my photo, can’t remember who sent it to me, so apologies in advance, and it’s not strictly Peak District area but it is Derbyshire. Does anybody remember Ley’s “Black Heart Malleable Castings” from Derby? They ran dropside trailers, nearly all AECs on the front and could have been Mickleover Transport contract motors or somebody similar.
Hiya chris. my AEC has LEYS casted on the diff caseings maybe thats where the AEC bit fits in. secondly yes it was mickleover

Hi 3300John/Chris. The firm mentioned was actually Littleover Transport, who in the 1960’s were based in Monk Street, not far from where I lived - but still some distance from Littleover, which does spill over into Mickleover. The firm then moved to Burton Road Littleover. Wish I had some pics from them days …

Aye,Littleover Transport not Mickleover, thanks Dave. Didn’t they have summat to do with Norde at Darley Dale as well as Toft Brothers and Tomlinson - maybe a souped - up wagon off them?
Nice old pic’s Chris its always good to see the old ones and while we are on the Leys theme her are some dignitiaries leaving after a visit around 1933. Again i think its a Derby Evening Telegraph cutting, no lorries but a bit of history of a good old firm. The brand name “Blackheart” Castings that formed part of many vehicles through the ages, who after a couple of takeovers in the 80s finally closed the doors in 1987. Again not the Peak District but well we are on our way there. Mike.

Aye,great old photo Mike. And of course there was Qualcast in Derby - finished up as Birmid Qualcast in Smethwick,a real heart of British industry, when it was in Staffordshire. I worked for Tangyes on Cornwall Road Smethwick in 1958 as an apprentice and I always remember Birmid Industries chimney pouthering out greenish black smoke with all tothers. Address was Smethwick 41 Staffs.
Sorry,I’m miles off t’Peak District.

I tipped 28 tonne of scrap bales at qualcast in its last days, you had to tip in the hole and remember to let the body down so not to hit the LPG pipes.
Qualcast at Victory Road had 20 tonne of foundry limestone every morning from Ballidon quarry, we also delivered to the Birmid plant at Smethwick (six wheeler’s only) but the less said about that place the better!
Pete.
A bit wet in Buxton this morning - Philmar Transport Volvo FM PN08NRF
At Tunstead works yesterday -
Given the type of sheeting system and the rear reinforcing bar, it seems as though that trailer has had quite a hard life. Yet it looks amazing for it’s age. ■■■■ fine bodies, those Wilcox.
