Nothing wrong with your memory Mike, the café was George Vales and the cheese place just across the lights at the top of Dale road was (I think) Bradbury’s Cheese. After a few buy outs, Bradbury’s Cheese is a massive set up on Staden lane industrial estate, just off the A515 near B&Q.

Isn’t that Wickes’ or have I got the wrong location?

Crikey thanks for the info “wondercat” pleased the cafe was’nt a dream. It was 61/62 when I use to pick the cheese up.I worked for Bagnalls the crocers in Wirksworth.Did’nt realise that Bradburys (albeit after several takeovers) were still operating.Just been on google earth and as you say its quite a big operation. I was in BQ only last week must open my eyes more. And “R.O.F” the BQ site use to be Focus ( I think  ) is that what you are thinking, don’t think there is a Wickes in Buxton, but.
Mike.

Mike was there a grocers in Wirksworh called Marts? or is my memory fading.

Yes Marts was near the imperial gardens or whatever it’s called.

Gotcha, Mike. Of course it was Focus. I hadn’t realised that they had sold the site to B&Q. About five or six years ago one of my jobs was running groupage from Selden’s chemical works behind the B&Q site back to our depot in Macclesfield. I remember watching the building being put up for Focus but it wasn’t long after they opened that they started a programme of “rationalisation”, closing many of their retail outlets.
Can’t remember the name of the haulage company opposite- the only two things that stick in my mind was that a) they ran tippers and b) they had a commercial garage which issued “questionable” MOT certs.

Hi wondercat.
Yes as “Shoshaye” has said it use to be in between the butchers and the Estate agents near imperial gardens on the main st.,( St Johns St ) but its had a change of hands and I don’t think its called that now.
Hi R.O.F.
Yes memory, it comes back with a bit of a nudge. I think the old Duron brake lining factory has had one or two tenants since they finished, seem to recall Kents (AJK) moving in when they left Longsons old place at Chapel but its open to debate.
Mike.

Was that their own vehicle or was it on contract?
Maybe from the days before their expansion triggered the “lowest price gets the job” days.

Nice bit of history those tickets Dan always interested in that sort of thing sad I know :frowning: .Bad news about Dene, grown up in the shadow of the place, sat on the wall as a kid hoping for a trip out, worked in there and hauled out.Sad but all things come to an end.
Mike.

Good evening your worship, how are tha?

This is not my photo, can’t remember who sent it to me, so apologies in advance, and it’s not strictly Peak District area but it is Derbyshire. Does anybody remember Ley’s “Black Heart Malleable Castings” from Derby? They ran dropside trailers, nearly all AECs on the front and could have been Mickleover Transport contract motors or somebody similar.
