Hi Dean, I drove the DAF VRU 655X for Chris Dare back in 1987, at that time he had 4 DAF and 1 Renault tractor unit. His yard was down the end of Pompeys Lane which was just up on the left past the double roundabouts at the end of Longham lane. we used to drop trailers in the layby near the Angel pub or on the waste land before Haskins was built to go into yard with units to fill up with diesel etc…

Hi Dean. Leyland Bison was one of Dennis Falls fleet. Definitely not one of FW Eatons.

jshepguis:
Looks to be the vehicle air filter housing Dean, as it stuck out a bit behind the cab on this unit look as if to maximise the size of the bodywork they have moved it.

Funny enough Paul Gee mentioned it to me and i never give it a thought when i posted the pic,but your right and here’s a pic
of one stuck out the back of the cab.

vwvanman0:
The taylors lhd volvo is from Aldridge west Midlands, there is a restored f12 in that livery that goes to the shows. There may be a thread on tn as i remember seeing some of their trucks somewhere.

Steve

Thanks for the info Steve, nice looking colour scheme. I assume they did the continent ?

although i never knew his yard was down Pompeys lane but can see why you dropped the trailers.  Is Chris still about ?

What was the company called that operated the containers off Poole docks. Think they were called Container Link and a fella called Dave
run it from an office inside Truckline’s ferry terminal building. I may be wrong but i think Truckline owned it.

The 8 wheeler market has always had alot of competition.

In 1970 Guy announced the 56 ton Guy BigJ8 that was intended for operation with a draw-bar trailer. It was powered by a 350 bhp ■■■■■■■
engine and would have been a very quick motor if it had been operated as a standard 8 wheeler. It was shown at Earls Court in 1970 but
unfortunately there was not enough intrest and it never went into production.

Hi Dean. I drove for Chris in 1987/8/9 They were known as Truckline containers back then and then went to Container link after that and I think they used tautliners rather than containers on french registered trailers. There were two chaps in the office running it when I was hauling for them, Dave Winchester and Jeremy Ledger. As far as I know Chris is still about but lives up Yeovil way now, I havent seen him since the mid 90s. Cheers

Stroll on “steam” you have a good memory remembering those names. Dave Winchester and Jeremy Ledger what a blast from the past, both
niuce blokes to deal with and never had any problems with them. I thought it was something to do with Truckline originally but dont remember
the containers being advertised at all.

I dont know Steve Cook personally but he lives about 5 miles from me and he is tucked away in the middle of nowhere. The really strange
thing is i have never seen one of his trucks that i can remember locally. I think he must travel very early to avoid traffic as the roads are
not very good and he has some long old trailers. The only time i have spoken to him was after passing him coming down Cherbourg hill and
he had a ERF with a 525 ■■■■■■■ and a Volvo FH16 both with heavy loads creeping down the hill. About an hour later he arrived in the
docks and i had a chat with him, and he’s a really nice bloke and was telling me they were over 100 ton each. Intrestingly i have been told
by other people that he has done some very well paid jobs and one involved using barges in Italy, that must have cost a fortune.

Heres another pic of that DAF which must be rare these days.

Hi Dean
I spoke to Dave Eaton the other day and he said Fred had acquired the Foden for a debt,I think he said it was owned by Wareham Ball Clay.
Apparently it had failed the mot on the handbrake and the handbrake was a transmission brake. They re-lined it and tried bedding the brakes in by driving with the handbrake on and ended up winding up the diffs. The diffs went back to Foden to be refurbished.
Fred went to get the Foden and towed it back to the yard,he contacted Foden and asked if he paid for the diffs could he have them to which they agreed,Daves seems to think it was around £500,they were fitted and it went back on the road after a lick of blue paint!

Dave Eaton as in FW Eaton at Holton Heath

Regarding Foden transmission handbrakes; we always relined them at test time and I carried a length of scaffold tube to get extra leverage on the handle. I had to take them for test with about 12 tonnes in the body and drive up the test ramp at test stations then swing my legs out of the door so the tester could see the footbrake wasn’t on as well. The ‘fun’ came when I had to release it again and I had to stand up in the cab to get a good pull on it!

Morning Rob, Thats intresting, sounds like Wareham Ball Clay were having financial issues back then. I may be wrong but did English China Clays
take it over at one point ? I see its now operated by Imerys.

Used to go in there as a kid in my grandads trucks when loading boats on Poole docks.

Heres a clipping from 1976.
