If memory serves me right I think high street transport were part of the Burton tailoring group, they had a depot in Leeds but I think they were nationwide but could be wrong

yes nationwide, they had a depot in dosthill ,tamworth in the 70’s and from what i was told years later it was a dead mans shoes type of job…

Hi Dean
Thanks for having me on. I drove for Fred Eaton when I passed my test then after a couple of years went onto round timber for Mike Jones at Wimborne. Spent my school holidays from the age of 5 to 16 at work with my dad at Dave Corbin although he didn’t drive for him I was always out in the trucks good to see a few of his on here

Mark R:
Ronnie Wood from Sheerness Kent.

Remember seeing a Scania of his in the early 90s with ‘papa was a rollin stone’ across the back of the cab, think they did a lot for Milton pipes with flats at the time

Hi Dean
Looking at Corbin marathon on 24 did this happen at wards in Ringwood?
I can remember going out with Dave Corbin in his Range Rover with the 6” high pile of ash from the king Edward cigar on the floor to a roll over at wards but can’t remember if it was the marathon or one of his 88s. Ronnie Nicklen from Furnells did the recovery

I got a lift with two Burtons drivers one night mid 70s,Cardiff changed over with Leeds at Trowell Services.IIRC both drivers had worked their way up at Burtons from leaving school, finishing up with a well paid driving job there.Collar and tie etc…

We have had a fair few of Fred’s motors on here so i assume you know “steam” that also drove for them. Dont know how far you are
through the thread but there will be loads of motors/companies you will recognise.

"King Edward cigars " Remember him puffing on them all the time, bloody great things.

I remember when he first went to buy the Range Rover when they first come out and went to the dealer down West Quay road in
Poole and wanted to buy 2. So he said “Discount for cash” and they said “NO” !! Can you believe it so he went upto the dealer in
Salisbury and bought one.Dont think he bought 2 but may have its along time ago.

I still cant remember how he ended up with the Marathon as he never liked them. i imagine it was a nearly new ■■■■■■ back as he
use to often buy the tracked machines that worked in the scrap yard like that and save a fortune. He had a few contacts that used
to give him the heads up.

I remember him telling me when the Leyland saleman popped in to see him when he was running F88’s on the artic work trying
to flog him one so he took a loaded F88 up the road with him in the passenger seat and he never called in again !

The Marathon turned over at Corbins yard and it went over 3 times in total so it was probably that motor that went over at Ward’s.

What about Dave’s 6 wheeler F88 that was a good motor.

We have had a fair few of Furnells wreckers on here.Remember Ronnie he was the dad and had a son who was also a fitter but
cant remember his name. Ronnie was a good bloke.trying to remember Furnell’s first name ? He died a few years ago in a flat fire
in Sandford. Here’s one of his wreckers.

I think AP BURT were from the Brizzle area. Also a bit of rope wouldnt go amiss ,over the Bradstone on the back of the Daf

I would put money on the Carlsberg Daf being from Northampton Dean.

The clue to Armitage Shanks location is in the name; the factory is at Armitage near Rugeley!

Pete.

Hi Dean, Were ARC not a beige colour, Cant remember them being orange, but I could be wrong on that.

Hi Dean, Were ARC not a beige colour, Cant remember them being orange, but I could be wrong on that.

ARC vehicles were a mix of yellow, beige and a pale green at various times in their life! I drove an ex ARC Foden and that was yellow. It was RMC who had orange as their colours before Cemex took them over.

Pete.

True colours.

Hi Dean
Can remember when Corbin bought the Volvo MYG216P it was parked by the side of the shed in Candy’s Lane and I knocked off one of the rear number plates with the dumper,I was probably only about 12 I crapped myself waiting for the rollicking but I got away with it. Went with Mike Corbin in it one summer running grain back from critchel estate to merley park rd Dave was storing it in the 2 silos he had there, used to itch like buggery.
Mike Furnell died in the fire I think his father originally had the wreckers and I believe Dave bought some f88s off of him OTK 59J being one and WPR 595M another.
Andy Nicklen is Ron’s son sadly I think Ron has passed away. The MAN I believe is Eatons there’s another picture of it on Gravel Hill with diamond Don driving it in his tie!
Started on Eatons just after steam left,I drove the E series that he had from new, bloody awful thing

Yes that 6 wheeler was a nice truck. Do you remember the train horns he had fitted on it,jesus they were loud.

Yes i remember the top yard with the warehouses in Merley Park Road. he sold it for housing.

Your probably right about it being Mike’s dad that started the garage and wreckers bit before my time really. I never knew he bought
some F88’s off them. Pic of OTK 59J below.

Remember Andy now you mention his name he was ok like his dad.Think they lived in a road off Dawkins road that took you to the
industrial estate where Phil Horridge and Cutlers were.

Do you have any pics of Corbins trucks or any other local companies ?

Molo Foden.Think they had yards in Poole and Southampton.

I’m sure he changed the name on the door of the f88 to read DG Corbin instead of DG Furnell and apart from the phone number he left the rest of the sign writing as it was because it says European Traction Poole Dorset England. He must of been having a tight moment, the only man I knew who had a double headed coin!
I haven’t a lot of pictures they have all been lost unfortunatly.
