My guess would be a Mk10 Jag, but I’m probably wrong…

I think you are wrong. I think it is an XJ Jag. Came out in the (mid?) 70’s eventually sold as Jags and Daimlers in both straight 6 and V12 (the Daimler) versions. Arthur Daley of the TV show Minders quite liked them… Nice cars though.

You might be right about a very early XJ6, though they were first introduced in 1968. God I’m getting old…

1968 eh? When I was a kid I was told by my Great Granddad that times goes by faster as you age. Well, I can now confirm that and say that events (such as car launches, for instance) seem closer to present time in my mind than they were. Odd. As I age I am also becoming ambidextrous. Very odd.

D.J Ball are based on the Airfield Estate in Ashbourne Dean. Regarding the Eaton Conrete ERF; they were always steady (even their tippers! ) and at one time controlled by a former military man who wouldn’t allow radios or cb’s in the trucks and also was extremely fussy about company image and insisted on the vehicles being kept immaculate by the drivers.

Pete.

Ray Smyth:
Hi Dean, The 8 wheeler Leyland picture at Branksome brings back many memories.
From 1995, my main source of work for my lorries was delivering specialist fabrics and
Anti-Gas garments for the Police and Military from Remploy Textiles factories as far North
as Aberdeen & Dundee, and as far South as Poole, Redruth, & Penzance. About once every
two weeks, I would deliver to and collect from 4 or 5 Remploy factories and arrive at the
Alder Hills, Poole, Remploy site. The next stop would be my parking place for the night, at
the rear of what now looks like a John Lewis store. A 2 minute walk would get me to the
Branksome Railway Hotel Pub, where I would have my evening meal, and perhaps a pint or two.

Cheers, Ray Smyth.

Happy memories Ray and the Branksome Railway Hotel must be one of the few pubs locally i have never been in.

Heres a bit about the IMP Pete.

1965 advert.

Interesting! I had forgotted the Imp’s engine was at the back. Strange to see that some figure are given also in litres and kilometres. Was the Imp supposed to be sold on the Continent? Never seen a French-registered one.

I don’t recall many Hillmans of any model in France actually.

were they not owned by Simca which was French or were they bought by Simca ?

“Simca” Thats a name i had forgotten Rob.

oiltreader:
Carried a fair few Imps from Linwood in the '60s can’t remember ever seeing a van type which may have been made at Dunstable. Rootes became part of Chrysler mid '60s as did Simca in the '70s and both later to become PSA Peugeot Citroen.
Oily

Funny you mentioned Rootes Oily as in this advert its called the Commer Imp van.

Anyone recognise the Scania 111 car transporter ■■

Looks like Sheertrucks from Sheerness, Kent Dean. Lots of European car imports through the port in the 70’s / 80’s if I recall. Bit of a peach job, decent money etc. I believe. Not sure what became of them, the transporter lads would know more. Paul.

Never thought of Sheertrucks “Camion Stew” I reckon you are right heres another one of there’s.

Just to clarify a few questions askedabout the Imp (sorry, didn’t mean to invade on such a great thread).

The Imp van was first sold as a commer and then as hillman with chrysler in the driving seat.

Exports were sold under the Sunbeam name. There are a number of Imps in France. 1 third of the Imp Club is dutch as they go mad for them.

The Imp van was also built solely in Linwood, Scotland, they transported the vehicle down to Ryton on rail to have engines fitted due to government politics.

Rootes (hillman, humber singer, sunbeam. Commer, karrier) was bought by chrysler, bought by Talbot and simca, bought by Peugeot who still own many rights today.

Hi Dean

Good to see you back posting again. DJ Ball are based in Ashbourne still running amixed fleet on general.

Thanks for the comments about the Imp,intresting stuff. Seems an expensive way to build vans when you have to transfer them somewhere else to have the engines fitted ! :unamused:

Hi Dean, interesting article, thanks. All our dolly convertors were York. They were a good idea but a pain when running them solo as they bounced summat rotten and threw light lenses off.We used to tape them on when running without a trailer, also we would blow the brakes off and run without them being braked as they were a bugger for locking up.Good job we only ran them solo a few times in the six years I was on them. The thing to remember was to pin the torsion bar before pulling off trailer otherwise they would fold up and a rayt job to get them level again.

Sheertrucks had the kia and hyundi and honda work out of sheerness, they later got a slice of the landrover contract at solihull. They kept part of the honda work when honda opened the Swindon factory and the imports at Avonmouth. They later were taken over by Ontime until ontime threw the landrover contract in about 2008. I,me not sure about the honda work after that. You,re right about the money and conditions, first class, some companies are paying less now than we were getting in 2007.
