On the earlier subject of mobile libraries, the photo below is one of 2 ran by Cleveland County Council they were based on the Ford R series coach chassis on M registration, so had a coach rear diff in. Always a good laugh when it had to go on it’s yearly GVT at Darlington, along the A66 it would easily do 80mph and there would be books everywhere by time we got there!!
Dean you were asking about this ERF, can’t be sure but it could be Harrison from Penrith who were lime merchants.

The ERF was operated by D A Harrison of Waverton I think and it was one that they acquired when they bought out a Haulier from Wigton. Leyland 600 would have the full story I’m sure. Bewick.

Morning Dean.
Vinatex had two sites, one at Havant and tother in Staveley Chemicals Chesterfield. They made PVC powder from VCM - Vinyl Chloride Monomer which was extremely hazardous.BP and ICI made it and drivers had to go on special courses to learn more about it.Calor Transport carried it out of BP Baglan Bay and Gilbraith Tankers out of ICI Runcorn in specially designed tanks.
Attached a photo of the offloading point at Staveley which was near to where we loaded Benzene,Toluene and Cyclohexane.
Incidentally I applied for a job with Calor Transport, they wanted a driver on nights based at Staveley doing a Worcester changeover with their Briton Ferry driver on that VCM job.Unfortunately I got a letter from them to say that Vinatex were closing their operation so I was not required.I would have had to go on a course as mentioned above.I think from memory that full rigs were to be exchanged at Worcester, not trailer changes,to minimise any risk.It was 1978/79 so I’m a bit hazy.

Morning Oily.
Nice photo but the tanks were pulled by Gilbraith Scammell Trunkers in those days and the tanks were designed by ICI and BP.I forgot to mention that VCM is a gas,not a liquid so looked very much like propane etc tanks.Calor were using ERF “A” and “B” series IIRC and I think that maybe Suttons did the work now and again.

Hi Dean Gallachers were from Stanley County Durham, always had a nice liveried and diverse fleet, don’t know if they are still on the go or have been swallowed up by others. Looks as if the Atki is a subby as it also has a County Durham prefix registration number, here is a model from the Corgi Hauliers of Renown series of Gallachers.
Thanks for the info and pic “jshepguis”

Hi Dean
A while ago you were enquiring about Joe Elliott Earthmoving at Springwell Village, Gateshead and the possible purchase of a Mack, unfortunately I have been unable to find anything further but have come across this photo, which looking at the angles, was taken from Elliotts yard.It is a shot of the Harbour & General yard next door to Elliots, who were civil engineers and as the name suggests they did a lot of on shore marine and coastal defence work. I think they built a new harbour at St Helier, Jersey.
The Derrick crane was used to lift steelwork and fabrications around the yard and was a bit of a local landmark.Springwell and my village, Eighton Banks were situated on one of the higher spots in County Durham hence the aeriels.
The road roller and Blaw Knox in the foreground belong to Sillars a road laying outfit from Stockton, I think they did a lot of subcontracting for H&G.
A Bison and DAF can be seen, they belonged to Brian Olds who specialised in plant transport and had a small yard around the corner.
Brian went onto develop the Truckstop just North of the Washington / Birtley services on the A1M which he subsequently sold to BP.
To the left of the photo would be the Bowes Rope Haulage Railway Line and further over again would be Springwell Quarry, which is now a large landfill operated by Thompsons from Prudhoe.
Apart from the landfill and the railway line the site is now all housing.

Thanks for the pic “Tyneside” Very intresting post about one picture. Still dont know if Elliotts ever did buy a Mack.

Here we go Dean, you are right a very sizeable company.
From Derby Dean, used to be Akkys mostly. They were sold to Fred Sherwood’s early 90s(?) , His son Alan was running Sherwood’s then n got a large house in its own ground thrown in with the deal. The company I worked for used to do his electrical work n we rewired it before his son moved in
